Danny Manning's class of 2016 represented a clear step down from his impressive 2015 recruiting effort. Nevertheless, Manning will need Brandon Childress, Samuel Japhet-Mathias, Donovan Mitchell, and Richard Washington, as well as transfers Keyshawn Woods and Austin Arians to step up in a big way in order to address Wake's lack of roster depth.

--Childress is rated a 3-star prospect on Scout (NR), Rivals (NR), ESPN (#32 PG), and 247 (#224 overall/#39 PG).
--Japhet-Mathias is rated a 4-star prospect on Scout (#91 overall/#20 C), Rivals (NR), and 247 (#89 overall/#13 C), and 3-star prospect on ESPN.
--Mitchell is rated a 3-star prospect on Scout (NR), Rivals (#148 overall), and 247 (#171 overall/#43 PF), and a 2-star prospect on ESPN (#74 PF).
--Washington is rated as a 3-star prospect on Scout (#29 SG), Rivals (NR), ESPN (#42 SG), and 247 (#200 overall/#34 SG).

Wake will also add two transfer players during the 2016-2017 season:

Sophomore shooting guard Keyshawn Woods, a sophomore transfer from Charlotte will have three years of eligibility remaining beginning in the 2016-2017 season. Woods will sit out 2015-2016 as per NCAA transfer rules. Woods chose Wake over Butler, Creighton, South Carolina, and St. Joseph's.
--Woods was rated a 4-star prospect on Scout (#30 SG), a 3-star prospect on Rivals (UR) and 247 (#353 overall/#81 SG), and a 2-star prospect on ESPN (#86 SG).
--As a freshman, Woods averaged 8.4 points (50.4% 2FG, 46.6% 3FG, 67.6% FT), 2.3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists

Senior small forward Austin Arians, a 6'6 graduate transfer from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, chose to play his final season at Wake over Wisconsin, Utah, and Minnesota. He will be immediately eligible in the 2016-2017 season.
--Arians was rated a 3-star prospect on Scout and was not rated by Rivals and ESPN.
--As a junior, Arians averaged 11.4 points (47.8% 2FG, 35.5% 3FG, 81.6% FT), 3.9 rebounds, and 1.3 assists

The staff has now filled both available scholarships for the Class of 2017 after landing commitments from Top-50 SG Chaundee Brown and 3-star SF Timmel "Melo" Eggleston:

--Brown is a 4-star prospect on Rivals (#39 overall), Scout (#40 overall/#7 SG), ESPN (#30 overall/#9 SG), and 247 (#35 overall/#6 SG)
--Brown chose Wake over offers from Kansas, Florida, Maryland, Connecticut, Indiana, Xavier, Memphis, Louisiana State, Georgia, USC, Texas Tech, Georgia Tech and Central Florida.

--Eggleston is rated a 3-star prospect on Rivals (NR), Scout (NR) and ESPN (#51 SF) and a 4-star prospect on 247 (#115 overall/#22 SF).
--Eggleston chose Wake over offers from Baylor, Connecticut, Miami, Georgia, Nebraska, Louisiana State, Clemson, Memphis, Virginia Tech, USC, Texas Tech, Oregon State, South Carolina, Washington State, Georgia Tech, Boise State, and Loyola (MD).

Following a busy 2016 offseason, Manning and his staff do not have open scholarships remaining at their disposal for the class of 2017.

Some thoughts:

-It seems that our main competition for 2016 recruits included Indiana, Mississippi State, and Miami. Alabama, Gonzaga, and Oklahoma were up there, too.

On the one hand, that's a significant step up from the [name redacted]-era. On the other, that's a pretty low set of expectations. It's going to be tough - if not impossible - to compete with the likes of Kentucky and Duke, but we can and should be more competitive in recruiting battles against the programs above once we start winning games.

-We still lost a lot of head-to-head recruiting battles in 2016. Losing top prospects like Harry Giles, Elijah Wright, Koby McEwen, and Javin Montgomery-DeLaurier hurt, especially given the time we invested in their recruitment. Can the staff do a better job of identifying top talent and closing when it counts? I thought so this time last year, but I am much less certain this year.

-Our 2017 offer list feels less "local" than our 2016 list did at this point last year. This strikes me as a risk, but we'll see if it pays off next fall.

-Our 2017 offer list feels as ambitious as our 2016 list did at this point last year. Will our Class of 2017 be more impressive than our Class of 2016? It kind of has to be...

-I still think we need an elite recruit at SG to be competitive. There are a lot of intriguing players on this list, but we will facing a ton of competition from elite programs.

-Overall, I do not know what to think of this staff from a recruiting perspective. Collins, Crawford, Japhet-Mathias, Mitchell, Mitoglu, and Moore were all signed following fairly brief recruitments. Childress is obviously is an exception while Washington and Wilbekin were clearly prioritized targets. At some point, IMO, the staff should face some scrutiny if this pattern continues. What exactly is the plan?

Might not be the right way to look at things, but I think Manning is free to "swing for the fences" in 2017, given we'll probably only be taking 1-2 players from the class.

And while it is still a couple of years away, the 2018 class probably won't be particularly large, either.

So might as well go for some of the top guys.

Past "swing for the fences" classes landed a top prospect that didn't pan out (Loren Woods), a backup plan that worked out really well (Josh Howard), and an early commit who fell off due to injuries (Cam Stanley).

High risk, high reward!

Loren Woods ended up OK... it was just for another team.

So, it looks like Rondale is definitely out, maybe even before the semester is over if Crab is making the trip to Maui and he isn't. Since some people are talking about the potential of taking two players, where would the other attrition come from? I know that we've been talking about Dinos leaving after two years, but if he keeps playing like he has been I can't imagine him going pro in Europe (unless the Greek league is way worse than I think it is). McClinton maybe? I'm having a hard time imaging where another transfer would come from barring someone doing something supremely stupid and getting kicked off the team (and excluding Rondale because he gone).

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Manning is not typically one to save scholarships. If Rondale or some one else bails this spring or winter, does he use the scholly for a late addition '16 recruit or save it for 2017?

I don't expect anyone specific to depart. I'm just looking at recent Wake Forest transfer history and overall NCAA basketball transfer rates.

Unfortunately, it's not always who we'd hope or expect.

What is it about Harris and Eggleston that makes them targets over higher rated prospects? Attainability? Physical Characteristics? Fit with system? Just think they're better?

Clearing up space for Kwe?

But seriously, I think he would be better off saving it for 2017 and trying to land the best player possible. I think that if Manning tried to use the scholarship for a 2016 recruit that, at this point, we would be getting someone worse than if we just saved it for 2017. According to 247 there are only 4 recruits in 2016 who we were involved with who are still uncommitted and we're cool on all of them, so using the scholarship for 2016 would mean that we would have to hold out for a decommit, snag a grad transfer (but that's only for one year), or we reach down and really scrape the bottom of the barrel.

I guess the most efficient thing to do would be to bring in a grad transfer on the scholarship for 2016, which would then have it freed up for 2017 unless they can land someone legit in the 2016 class (but this probably isn't likely).

According to 247 there are only 4 recruits in 2016 who we were involved with who are still uncommitted and we're cool on all of them, so using the scholarship for 2016 would mean that we would have to hold out for a decommit or we reach down and really scrape the bottom of the barrel.

I suppose we could also just hit the graduate transfer market and take on a one and done that way, essentially saving the scholly for 2017.

Updated my post when I realized this. This makes the most sense and is probably the most efficient use of the scholly.

I don't expect anyone specific to depart. I'm just looking at recent Wake Forest transfer history and overall NCAA basketball transfer rates.

Unfortunately, it's not always who we'd hope or expect.

It sounds a lot like Rondale right now.

And really, there's nobody else on the roster that I would "want" to depart. Everyone else, I believe has the potential to be an ACC talent. (Though that could change once we see Mitchell on campus, but meh)

Is this confirmed? Where did you hear that?

I thought we were talking in addition to Rondale. Clearly, the majority of folks around here think he's done at Wake Forest.
