Wake Football Offseason Thread

I agree with Pilchard's response (and DeaconSig's point that I don't have a basis to comment on specific players). I would (again) caution about assuming that we will see a wave of transfers. We talk all the time about the value of a Wake Forest degree. Why would these guys give up that degree for 1-2 years of small college football? It just doesn't make sense. In addition, since Clawson came on board two years ago we have only seen three transfers that I can recall involving players that had not yet earned their degree: Travis Smith to Eastern Michigan, DaiQuan Lawrence to Catawba, and Will Smith to Liberty (am I forgetting anyone?). There's no reason to expect that trickle of players to become a tidal wave now.

The center that went to South Carolina
The backup QB now at WSSU
The other backup QB Cameron who went somewhere in Florida

amazing that he can graduate in 3 years, good for Tyree

A nice job by Dan Collins on this 5-part Q&A with Coach Clawson.

The best part of the Q&A is not necessarily newsworthy (where we made progress and where the team actually regressed – i.e. turnover margin!). Clawson also shares his stats on playing time by year. Also credit to Dan for asking a question about the admissions department.

But there were a few small items that were newsworthy:

This may be the first time that he has declared the starting QB job to be open and a three-way race. It’s clear that he is talking about Wolford, Hinton and Kearns because he also confirms that the plan is to redshirt Newman.

He talks about his desire to have more rotation at the OL and WR positions. Specifically he says that Benzinger, Gilliam and Haney had strong redshirt seasons and may be in line for 20 snaps per game next season. You’d also assume that Steven Claude and Scotty Washington may not need to win starting jobs to be able to get on the field.

The tentative date for the spring game is April 9.

If Clawson does not turn it around I don't think it will be for lack of effort. The indoor is a big deal, especially early season. I remember Clawson talking about the week of the Syracuse game we missed 1 or 2 days of practice because of thunder storms, where of course it is mandated you can't practice in or after until 30 minutes after the last audible thunder. I think from reading that he feels next year should be a considerable jump in wins and we should expect it as well.

Really good overview by Clawson of where we were, where we are and where we're going.
Interesting how much they track number of snaps by individual players and classes.
You have to be optimistic if Clawson says he will be very disappointed if we're not practicing for bowl game this time next year.

What's the thinking behind having two practices then spring break then the rest of your practices?

maybe keep the guys from doing anything really stupid or unhealthy on spring break because footballs back on their mind

Spring game is April 9 because an email went out that Football Reunion weekend is April 8-9.

Yeah that doesn't make much sense to me either, is that common at other schools, I have no idea?

I don't know the reason, but I recall from last spring that this was common at other schools: 1) start before spring break, 2) have extended periods between practices and 3) conclude spring practice at least a week before coaches can be on the road for the spring eval period (starts April 15 this year)

I'm usually not a fan of player interviews. They're usually just fluff questions with responses filled with cliches and nonanswers. However, I really recommend reading this interview that Les Johns did with Brandon Chubb. He got some interesting answers to some great questions on changes in the locker room during his career, the low point in his career and what he thinks of the direction of the program (I think Les made it free to all readers):

Excellent article.
Chubb will be successful in whatever he decides to do.
Really hope he gets to outer space one day.......

94, isn't there a rule that the first two practices can't be in full pads, or is that in the summer? If they're just in shells, that could explain it.

That's a great interview.
The piece about the locker room isn't surprising in the least. Players follow the cue of the coach.

Pilchard, I was at the last game of the season a few years ago were afterwards, Nikita called out some players for huddling at the end of the bench and not caring about the game. I attended the Duke game this weekend and the whole team was up and watching the game. It was easy, in the past, to see who mailing it in and counting the days left. I just feel that Claw will have a certain number of junior players who will not be on the sidelines next fall. He will get them through the spring and summer school and then out the door. How many will it be?

Pretty sure that was Camp being quoted.

Maybe one of the best player interviews....and yeah, the before/after take on the locker room is quite revealing.

Didn't know Chubb was only 6'0" ( per some pro sites ) and unlikely to get drafted. Sounds like another John Abbate case.

I think Chubb has. A better chance than Jon at the next level. Guarantee his measurables
Like 40, vertical etc blow Jons out of the water. Much better pro prospect IMO.
