Wake Football Offseason Thread

so do we have any jock sniffers hanging around the weight rooms who can tell us how the OL is looking?

I bet they are in the best shape of their lives!

This may be completely anecdotal but I thought a lot of Wolford's interceptions were tipped passes at the line or that hit the receiver's hands.

So all is forgiven that his INTs were tipped passes?

Certainly not. He made some poor decisions as did Hinton. Those trying to use the INT numbers need to keep in mind that a number weren't his fault and instead bouncing off our WR's hands.

Hinton is a better runner but not the passer or field general Wolford is.

Got an alert that Zeek Rodney is taking a leave of absence next season for "personal issues" and returning in 2017.

Talk about a tough loss!!! Hopefully, he can get those personal issues taken care of and return in '17. Say hello to Sulaiman Kamara!

Hmmm. Trying to think about what that does to the depth chart. Wake’s defense actually designates a nose tackle and a defensive tackle (as opposed to two defensive tackles). A few months ago, I had the depth chart as:

NT: Zeek Rodney / Khalil Welsh
DT: Josh Banks / Chris Stewart

Then Welsh left the team, but that opened up a scholarship for 5th year senior Shelldon Lewinson, so the projected depth chart looked like this:

NT: Zeek Rodney / Shelldon Lewinson
DT: Josh Banks / Chris Stewart

With Rodney out for this season, I suppose it would look like this:

NT: Shelldon Lewinson / ??
DT: Josh Banks / Chris Stewart

So Lewinson goes from a fifth year senior that wasn’t returning to a projected starter. The next question would be who would backup (or rotate with) Lewinson at nose tackle? Moving either Josh Banks or Chris Stewart would seem unlikely. Possibly Stewart, although he is a converted DE so you’d think nose tackle might be a stretch. The other candidates would be Willie Yarbary, Elontae Bateman and Sulaiman Kamara (I hate burning redshirts on defensive linemen!) depending on whether any are suited for the nose position. Should be interesting.

These things are common....and we haven't even got into injury season yet. And FWIW, I'm fine with Lewinson at this point.

I definitely recall that Lewinson was quite effective when he relieved Rodney for 15%-20% of the total snaps, but obviously in those situations he was coming in with fresh legs. Will he be as effective if he needs to take on 70% of the snaps?

In most cases like this you never see the player play again for the team he is taking a leave of absence from. Hope that doesn't turn out to be the case this time.

Didn't DeGeare miss a season because his mom was sick?

Something like that. It was his true junior season and he came back as a redshirt senior. Similar to Rodney.

We always seem to get our fair share of terrible news every offseason

Football rosters are huge. Every team has similar attrition. In the limited time since WF announced Rodney would be sitting out, Virginia Tech, Colorado State, Navy and Baylor (who appears to have lost about a quarter of their roster) have lost players. In addition, Oklahoma had a player arrested and UGA had a player break his arm. That's just since yesterday morning.
