NFL Offseason Thread: NFL Draft - Rams pick Goff #1

NFL is putting microchips in the footballs during the preseason and regular season Thursday Night Football games to determine how narrowing the field goal uprights would impact FG conversion rates. They want to attempt to dissuade FG attempts and encourage 4th down attempts.

Also seems like microchips could be helpful in the future for goal line and 1st down measurements.

And ball deflation.

I've always figured that microchips and some sort of laser precision for first downs was a no-brainer if the technology was there.

Most of the articles I've read about technology in sport suggests the NFL is just hesitant to embrace technology, particularly coaches. Of course, once one coach wins using the technology, they'll all embrace it. It makes more sense for players to be tracked in football than any other sport.

The technology for 1st downs seems like an extension of the technology used at the plane of a garage door.

Tennis has had something like that for years although it's on the courts themselves, not the balls.

Yeah. It's a little more difficult for football than tennis or soccer because any number of people could be crossing the line. But it shouldn't be too tough with a sensor in the ball.

Josh Gordon has been reinstated by the NFL. He's suspended for the first four games.

NFL reportedly pulling '60s Jim Brown and '80s Bernie Kosar from the time machine for that one as well

Asked whether Jimmy Garoppolo could remain starter upon Tom Brady’s return from suspension, an annoyed Bill Belichick said, "Jesus Christ."
