Wake Baseball

Our team ERA is down over 2 runs a game from last year so far.

That doesn't factor in the ACC schedule yet. Pitching and hitting, both, will still have to improve significantly, which it can.

If we can take 2nd from Coastal, I'll be hopeful vs Clemson. Big question right now is can we hit Clemson pitching? They held S. Carolina to 1 run in 18 innings of ball in their 3 game series!

2 walks and 2 HBP in inning two plate another run. 2-0 Wake. Craig at bat bases loaded pitching change.

Can't get the runner home. Craig up twice with runners on 3rd and less than 2 outs and no RBIs.

Very disappointing loss yesterday...Bases loaded with no outs in the first and second innings and only managed one run each time...

Yea, 2nd game was bad all around. Team B.A. .176 and 12 LOB isn't "good hitting". Really unbelievable we didn't score 6 runs again early. In the first 2 innings we had the following given to us by Coastal: 5 walks, 2 wild pitches, and 2 hit by pitches! Then mid-game our relievers start to come in....1st gives up 8 balls to walk first 2 batters in a row. Craig comes in to give up hit with 2 strikes that scores 2 runs, and at least one other P gave up another hit on 2 strikes. Hindsight is 20/20 but Walter may regret replacing starter when he did and with who. Fossas had an ignominious comeback appearance.

Looking ahead now to Clemson: Wouldn't be surprised at a sweep by Tigers but we'll need 2/3 since at home and to stay in hunt for end of season bid, IMO. Schedule is rough.

Still don't know what to make of the offense so far. Batting a cool .270 (140th in the nation) versus relatively poor competition can't spell good things for the future against tough ACC competition. Only time will tell.

Yes, this echoes what I said earlier in the post about Walter's hype about our overall batting prowess.....it just isn't a reality. Below are some quotes from our site about Clemson. These are the traits of a good and winning program....and this with a first year coach after a legend is let go (Jack Leggett).....

• On Wednesday, the Tigers were trailing Winthrop by a 3-1 margin heading into the ninth, but rallied to win on a walkoff pinch-hit single by Robert Jolly.
• Freshman Seth Beer leads the Tiger offense with a .400 average, three homers and 12 RBIs. The Clemson pitching staff has an ERA of 2.02, averaging more than a strikeout per inning.

Wake wins 6-4. Two Craig taters. Would like to get some more bats going. But solid win. One more for the series win.

Deacs Win 6-4...Will Craig with 2 more HRs and the save...I think he sells popcorn and sings the anthem too...

Great start to the series. They play again Saturday at 4 pm.

Great aggressiveness and start to game. Pretty impressed with Clemson freshman pitcher. Stayed in there and didn't get rattled. Coach had a lot of faith in him and he kept us at bay after the 3rd inning, giving the Tigers a chance to rally. Craig was more impressive. Nothing short of a hero....2 bombs and 2 great innings of work on the mound to close the door. Tigers held slight edge in B.A., .250 vs .226. The simple difference was Craig's HRs and one with 2 on base....this was the difference in the game. (Clemson had 2 HRs, we had 3)

If this is the same pitching rotation Clemson used in the Gamecock series (didn't look it up), then these next 2 games will be very tough. If correct these will be the 2 starters who held S.C. to 1 run in 18 innings the last 2 games of the series....
