WF Track & Field (Heppenstall Named ACC Freshman of the Year)

Heppenstall is a stud. Both teams finished 12th. We just don't have a
lot of depth for whatever reason. Throws coach is doing a great job with
his group.

When John Stone was at WF, he and 3 other fast football players would run in the ACC championships and score in the 100, and in the 4X 100 relay. Not sure if Clawson doesn't want his players running track (Tylor Harris participated in the throwing events), but allowing those guys to run would be key to moving up in the ACC standings.

Maybe, but other than Kevin Marion nobody on the football team has been as fast as Stone. He was a burner. Idlette ran too.

In 2006 Outdoors, Kevin Marion, Willie Idlette, and Kerry Major all scored at ACCs (and we won the 4x1 and the 4x4 relays with a couple of football guys on each). Although Willie, at least, always thought of himself as a track guy first.

Probably the big reason is cost. Few scholarships to give, and Wake's high tuition.

We only had two athletes score(Robert Heppenstall and Kathryn Lazarchick)score points in a running event(top 8). That's more than the high cost of tuition.

Definitely.

We scored points in women's javelin, men's and women's hammer throw, men's and women's discus, and men's shot put. I don't know if our throws coach is head coach material or not but he is doing a great job.

Mens combined cross country and track and field scholarships are 12.6. Women are allowed 18.

Half of Wake tuition > half of in state state school tuition.

Back in the 70's, several of our track team had a meeting with Gene Hooks, who was AD at the time.
Our beef was very little money/budget for track.
Someone had done some research and found (supposedly) that MD spent more on their shoes that our total budget.
Even though our resources and facilities may be lagging many other schools, it's amazing to compare what's available today vs yesteryear.

Heppenstall just advanced to the 800 finals at the NCAA championships, which will be run Friday.

And he's only a freshman!

Look for a PR and a new school record tomorrow night. He's got to be pumped.

Merckle finished 10th in the javelin. That made her a three-time all-american, just the 4th in Wake Forest track & field history.

Unfortunately, she didn't have her best throws. Was about 20' shorter than her best.
Still, to be a school record holder and multiple year AA is something special

Has Merkle qualified for the Olympic Trials? The years that the NCAAs fall on Olympic years are tough as college athletes with legit Olympic aspirations will want to train to peak not for the NCAAs, but for the trials and the Olympics.

Heppenstall 8th in 1:51. The field went out in a blistering 24.1 for 200. The guy from TAMU won in a NCAA meet record 1:43.55. Second fastest time in the world this year.

That's Director's Cup points for us!

Great season for Heppenstall.

Heppenstall was named ACC Freshman of the Year. He's the first Wake athlete to earn this distinction.

I'm surprised Bingham didn't win in 2005. Won the decathlon as a freshman, defeating the senior defending champ.

How many do the other ACC teams offer? We're obviously not a track power, but we have a few strong guys each year.
But, I did have the good fortune of being in Annapolis when our XC team placed third in the country. Gosh, that was a long time ago!

4 ACC titles in 6 years.....

Men's Cross Country, with their 14th place finish at ACC's, was the worst performing sport at Wake Forest last year. Far cry from a 3rd place NCAA finish.
