Big 5 conference money disparity could lead to a shake up with the Big 12

Is there even a remote possibility the ACC would ever drop Wake? Like say we continue to be bad in basketball and football for another 5-10 years- could they start to resent having to cut Wake checks?

No, there is not even a remote possibilty of that happening.

If you had asked people 25 years ago about the Syracuse, BC, Louisville, PITT, and Notre Dame being in the ACC and Maryland and Rutgers being in the Big 10, they would have said: "No, there is not even a remote possibility of that happening."

Exactly. Winning games doesn't seem to matter as much as making money. "Easy win" could become "freeloader" very quickly.

I continue to believe (fear) that within most of our lifetimes we will see the last games played by Wake teams in a P5 conference. Maybe even at the D1 level. I certainly hope there are changes in leadership at WF before we reach a critical stage.

When the ACC voted to expand with FSU, Syracuse got the same number of votes on the first ballot that the Noles got. Before the Big East formed the football side of their conference, Syracuse, BC and Pitt approached the ACC about joining as football only members of the ACC. ACC Commsioner Gene Corrigan advocated to the conference presidents to add Miami at the same time they added FSU. He also argued in favor of adding Notre Dame.

So it is not correct to say that 25 years ago there was not even a remote possibility of adding those schools to the ACC.

Worrying about the ACC dropping Wake is an enormous waste of time and is only worthy of pondering by the sky is falling crowd.

Wake has regressed to being a doormat in football and basketball is at it's all time low.

Yet the enablers allow it to happen. Because they enjoy the access and care far more about their egos than the university.

When Wake's biggest rival is Furman in twenty years you will have them to blame.

Correct. The ACC can't just kick Wake out for sucking. The conference would have to show good cause, which among other things, is defined in the bylaws as being deemed ineligible by the NCAA for a sport required for membership. And even at that, it would take a vote of three fourths of the other member schools.

Wake is in trouble if the current P5 arrangement evolves into something different. But we are not getting booted from the ACC.

People post what they want to believe.

Texas is the big problem in the Big 12. With the money from LH not being split evenly, a lot of uproar has come to fruition. LH needs to be transitioned into a Big 12 Network. At one point in time, Texas was powerful enough to go Independent. I don't think that possibility exists.

What's interesting about the Pac-12 is that their TV numbers are terrible. They are actually 6th in viewership numbers - behind the AAC.

The Pac-12 Network has been a disaster and fallen well short of the revenue goals the school has promised. They still haven't been able to cut a deal with Direct TV and outside of the conference footprint the channel sits on the premium tier of every provider.

Plus in reading the article I was taking this from, the Pac 12 divvies up somewhere around 67% of revenues to their schools because they have to pay all the costs associated with their network. The SEC & Big 10 divvy up over 90% because other folks like ESPN do their network, thus making it far more profitable for the conferences and the schools. Pretty soon those 2 will get over $40 mill per school, especially if the football playoffs stay healthy, they keep getting a team in AND somehow the SEC were to find a way to get their basketball teams advancing in the NCAA [where the ACC alone is set to earn about $40 mill from our 2016 record showing!]

the bold is the key

With Wake as the smallest P5 school, the bold is and has always been a given.

Winning in the football and bball revenue sports will cure all ills- here's to Coach Clawson and Manning getting things done!

We can talk about how teams want cupcake wins, but that's not important. The real question is if networks want to televise noncompetitive games involving Wake.

Think about this man. If Wake is the smallest school and they kick us out for being the smallest, some other school is going to be the smallest and they'll have to kick them out next. And so on and so on, until there is only one school left and it's the biggest and the smallest. Then what ?

Alabama wins the national championship every year?

It's not about being the smallest. It's about being the weakest. Unless you subscribe to the LOWF narrative, these are not the same things. Let's say Duke is on the small list; they are presently very effective in both revenue sports. No reason to kick them out.

The networks want compelling matchups.

Okay. Then think about the weakest.
