Orlando Gets ACC Football Championship

WF fans can now make their reservations...

Interesting. Florida makes cohabitation of unmarried individuals illegal (2nd degree misdemeanor). Seems anti-PC and pretty discriminatory to me. Will the ACC investigate and protest this heinous law?

Per Bob's picture, I can't see this being a financial decision unless Orlando somehow paid more to get the game than Charlotte did. But with poorer attendance, how could they break even?

It was not a financial decision at all. The game will never make more money than it does in Charlotte (with Atlanta off the table as a site, that is the only other city within the ACC's footprint that would even come close). They tried Florida sites when it first started, thinking they would get a steady dose of FSU vs. Miami....well, FSU made 1 of those first five championship games, and we are still waiting on Miami to make their first more than a decade later (though that streak could very well end this season).

There are rumors that the ACC inquired with South Carolina about holding it in Columbia, but that their AD declined the offer.

That rumor doesn't seem very likely. I think Orlando was always the choice because of all the stuff to do there plus the positive optics of doing something for Orlando after the mass night club shooting.

Generally agree with this, but would add that the ACCCG was pretty much a dog matchup every year when it was played in Florida; the games have had significantly more impact over the last few years in NC as at least one participant was playing for a seat in the NC title game or the BCS playoff.

From 2005 through 2009 when the game was played in J'ville and Tampa, the conference was down. Only twice in 5 years in Florida was a top 5 team even playing in the game. Each time, it was #5 VT who had no shot at the national title game regardless if they won or lost. The last two years in Florida, the matchups were particularly weak: #20 BC versus #25 VT in 2008 and #25 Clemson versus in #10 GT in 2009. While in Florida, the ACCCG had zero impact on the national title.

Over the last three years in Charlotte, the #1 team in the nation played in the game twice (FSU in 2013 and Clemson in 2015), and the #2 once (FSU in 2014). So, a win was required to play for a NC. That brings buzz.

Way to early to tell, but if this year's game pits two top 10 teams (something that happened for the first time last year), and is essentially a play-in game for the BCS playoff; the buzz and crowd for the game will be a huge improvement over the 2008 snorefest between BC and VT.

Miami/FSU or Miami/Clemson and it'll be ok. (Clemson needs to win this weekend for either of those to be a possibility)

Hard to imagine it not being Louisville. They already have the win over FSU and they play Duke and UVa in the Coastal. Clemson still has Pitt in the Coastal and FSU has UNC and Miami.

Orlando is a more attractive location than Jacksonville. I think the game will be better attended than the Jax ACCCGs.

When Wake makes it, there will be an OGBoards party at your house, right?

Haha. I live a pretty long way from there. That's like tailgating in Chapel Hill for a Wake home game.

official attendance was announced as 50,628, the lowest total in the ACC Championship's 12-game history

Multiple reports indicated the league was offering free admission to Disney employees; a league spokesperson disputed the volume that was being reported (“tens of thousands,” according to one account) but acknowledged the ACC was giving out free tickets to Orlando business partners.

ticket prices plummeted on the secondhand market

Why not Atlanta? If the SECCG is also in Atlanta, you could play 1 on Fri nite and 1 on Sat nite. I know the obvious concern about not having it at 1 of the conference schools, lest you have the possibility of a team getting a home game, but you could play it in Cville with a reasonable degree of certainty that UVA will not be 1 of the participants.

Probably b/c no available hotel rooms, no room for FanFests, practice sessions, etc. SEC game already locked into 4pm Saturday slot.

Moving from CLT is a stupid political move. Politics change, PC changes-- I predict it will not stay in Orlando long and will return to CLT when the furor dies down

Totally a political move to look good to the public right at the time. You don't see the ACC pissing off the Belk Bowl people and not having a team show up for the bowl in Charlotte. The CIAA tried to make a little political show themselves by moving their football game in November to VA, yet they did NOT move their money maker, basketball from the state of NC--it is still in Charlotte. Now what would have been interesting would have been if the ACC Tourney had been in G'boro in March instead of Brooklyn for the next 2 years--what kind of political show would they have made? And they sure haven't moved their offices from the plush grounds of the Grandover Golf Course and business complexes to another state [like New York or Massachusetts that is more of this political leaning]

So it was a "political move" to look good to the public in response to a "political move" that made NC a laughing stock around the country.
