Official '16-17 NBA Thread: not with a bang but a whimper

Top 15 players chase rings. If Embiid/Simmons someone else pans out, they will come.

That didn't exactly work for pre-Boogie Ant Davis. I wonder if that changes now because they're a wing short of being great.

Were they ever 1 superstar away? or had they donked away most of their space on Eric Gordons, Tyreke Evanses Omer Asik's and Jrue Holidays of the world?

Lebron went back because of the 3 #1 picks they got, not cause he loved Cleveland

He spelled it out in his "letter," he knew that he only had to win one in Cleveland and he'd be a legend forever (plus forgiven for his 4 years in South Beach).

and he gets to be coach/GM/mayor too, nice gig

Everyone has missed the obvious cause of the Pels/Kings trade - The Curse of the Ice Dancers.

With the demise of the curses of the Bambino and goat, The Curse of the Ice Dancers is the last long-running sports curse in American sports. For those of you who don't know about this, it happened in 1956. In those days, the NBA was nearly dead. There were eight teams. Among them were outposts in Syracuse, Fort Wayne (IN) and Rochester.

The Globetrotters would play after the NBA game. The owner of the Celtics also was the President of the Ice Capades.

The Celtics had made a reasonable trade to move from #7 in the first round to #2, but they wanted to get Rochester to pass on Bill Russell at #1. Basketball was a losing proposition at the time. the Ice Capades printed money for arena owners. The Celtics gave the Royals a week of the Ice Capades to pass on Bill Russell and take Sihugo Green.

The Royals took the offer. Not only hasn't this franchise won an NBA title since. They have moved three times. Their history of being vagabonds isn't even like the Buffalo Braves which moved from Buffalo to SD ot LA or the Lakers that moved from Minneapolis to LA or the Warriors who mover from Philly to SF.

Noooooo, the Curse of the Ice Dancers relegated this group of gypsies to move from one Siberian outpost to another to another to another to another. Rochester became Cinci which became KC which became SacTown.

This losing trade was inevitable.

Hell, even the Ice Capades have died.

LOL. He wouldn't have gone anywhere else for the picks. He wanted to go back home.

Sixers have plenty of talent with Embiid, Noel, Saric, Simmons, Covington, Ilyasova. They need health, wings that can defend, and a point guard. Simmons could be the point guard, if not, this draft has a few good point guards and wings.

LOL. He wouldn't have gone anywhere else for the picks. He wanted to go back home once they landed the #1 pick which got them Kevin Love and had another #1 pick, Kyrie, on a rookie deal meaning he could win a title.

FIFY

Or put another way, does he want to go home enough that he takes less than the max that he'd have to have taken if Kyrie wasn't on a rookie deal making $5 mil a year? #trusttheprocess

What if Embiid has a healthy career and becomes one of the best players in the NBA?
What if Simmons turns into an all-star level player?
What if the Kings or Sixers get their ping pong balls chosen this year and the Sixers are able to get Fultz or Ball?
What if the Lakers pick does convey at #4 or #5 this year? Or if it doesn't, it still becomes a valuable high pick next year when it's unprotected.
What if the Kings become a disaster and the unprotected 2019 pick turns into a piece of golden currency around the league (like Nets pick this year)?

A few of these things will probably happen or come close to happening. And the Sixers have so many bullets in the chamber they certainly don't need everything to hit.

Do the Lakers now pass the Kings and lose their pick as a result? How many games do the Kings win the rest of the way out?

I'm digging a Jazz/Pellies/Rockets path to the finals vs the Wizards for my CLIPS
