2016 College Football Coaching Carousel

With all the attention paid to head injuries and concussions now, you'd have to be an f'ing idiot to think not following the protocols wouldn't come back to haunt you. Nevermind just doing the right thing, but how could a coach at that level think he could get away with that?

His ethics class at UNC was fake?

This is a huge blow after 6 steady years of watching Wilson build the program.

IU’s defensive coordinator Tom Allen is a hot commodity for what he did at South Florida and then at IU this year. The word is that Hugh Freeze is offering $1 million plus for Allen to return to Ole Miss as D coordinator. Allen previously was an assistant under Freeze but left to get D coordinator experience. Anyway, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Allen get the job. He’s an Indiana native and a very charismatic guy. And he’s the first coach in 20 years to put a competent defense together at IU.

If they go outside the program, the guys I’d prioritize are Charlie Strong and Jeff Brohm.

Indiana named Tom Allen head coach and signed him to a 6 year deal: https://www.landof10.com/indiana/tom-allen-indiana-coach-what-to-know

So Wilson is fired for mistreating players, ignoring concussion protocols, etc. and you turn around and hire his DC who I guess supposedly had no part in that at all?

Maybe Allen blew the whistle on him?

<3 Tom Allen. Was hoping he would stay at USF long enough to take over when Taggart inevitably leaves.

Allen has only been on staff one year and the complaints reported thus far are from players that left the program 2-3 years ago.

And even had Allen been around during that time frame, it may not have mattered. IU's AD was adamant yesterday that the legal review he commissioned found no evidence that any player's medical care or treatment had been compromised. The AD claims that the change in coaches was about philosophical differences with Wilson. The fact that the AD hired Allen and that no other members of the coaching staff have been let go is consistent with this claim.

Thanks for the additional info.

You never know what you're getting when you hire an assistant but Allen feels like a home run for IU. First, he's got the current team and the 2017 recruiting class lining up behind him so IU likely won't take the step back that many teams do when they change coaches.

Second, he's a likeable, charismatic guy who is an Indiana native, the son of Indiana high school coach, a former Indiana high school coach himself and someone who actually views the IU job as a destination job and not a stepping stone. This matters for recruiting and for the support he'll need from the fan base which is historically focused only on the starts of hoops.

And finally, he's proven himself an exceptional defensive coordinator both in his time at USF and in his one year at IU. He took the same guys that Brian Knorr had for 2 years and took them from the worst defense of any power 5 team to actual legitimate respectability.

Indiana was the only FBS team this season to allow Wake's offense to score over 24 points.

What's your take on Taggart leaving this year? Would he leave for a lower tier P5 job or is he holding out for a better job?

I don't buy it. Wilson wouldn't be taking a 10 million dollar loss without cause, and philosophical differences is not cause.

Can we pause and reflect on the fact that the IU head coach and the Texas head coach both had $11 million buyouts?

I don't think he jumps to any P5 school. Probably one more year in Tampa. Flowers and Mack (if he doesn't declare) will be seniors and a stupidly easy OOC schedule should make another 10+ win season pretty easy. I'd love to see what he could do at Georgia Tech.

That had more to do with IU's QB throwing 5 INTs than poor play by the defense.

I'll grant you the pay out Wilson is taking certainly suggests something specific and inexcusable happened, but the AD was explicit that player care was never compromised.

Not really. The TD drives were 61, 80, and 75 yards. One FG was a 51 yard drive. The other was 15.
