Defensive Coordinator Search

In this kind of search is it common for the hiring HC to initiate contact with candidates of his choosing or is it more common for the HC to respond to the applications of interested parties?

Is it more probable that Clawson sought out Sawvel first or that Clawson responded to an initial inquiry by Sawvel?

Not that it matters ultimately, just wondering how the process ordinarily works.

Well Sawvel wasn't available at the beginning of Clawson's process.

Coaches know each other, their reputations, and who is up and coming. Majority of HC's will first reach out to who they want/know (if available). If no one is available that they "know" they will look at a shortlist of available coaches.

I would assume that Clawson and Sawvel crossed paths in the MAC (BGSU/N. Illinois) and through those interactions, Clawson proabably knew of his reputation/style/recruiting experience.

Of course, it could've just been that there was a free-agent DC out there who just coordinated a defense that was top 25 in just about every category

Yep. And just got passed over in favor of Clawson's original choice.

where's robb smith?

No. 10: Jay Sawvel
New job: Wake Forest defensive coordinator
Previous job: Minnesota defensive coordinator
Sawvel did an excellent job as Minnesota's defensive backs coach before shifting into the coordinator role this past season. The defense helped the Gophers win nine games, and Minnesota finished in the top 25 in points allowed, yards allowed and yards per play. After Tracy Claeys and the Minnesota coaches were fired, Sawvel had multiple Power 5 offers and landed at Wake Forest, which should be able to continue its success on defense after losing Mike Elko to Notre Dame.

No. 7: Mike Elko
New job: Notre Dame defensive coordinator
Previous job: Wake Forest defensive coordinator
The Irish had the first coordinator vacancy of the cycle: They fired Brian VanGorder in late September after his defense surrendered 149 points in the first four games. Brian Kelly considered several Power 5 candidates but settled on Elko, whose name emerged as a likelihood by early November. Elko has produced top 40 defenses in each of the past five seasons at two schools (Wake Forest and Bowling Green). His defenses are aggressive and opportunistic, and his scheme will be a welcome change as things became far too convoluted under VanGorder.

Any word on who Clawson will hire replace Derrick Jackson? Do we still presume it will be an LB coach?

Elko did good work at Wake, so thanks. And here's to success at ND (except for one game) next season. May he parlay that success into a Head Coach job.

From footballscoop.com

Wake Forest: Source tells FootballScoop Sam Houston State defensive coordinator Brad Sherrod plans to accept the linebackers position at Wake Forest. Sherrod is quite familiar with the recruiting area having played and coached at Duke and has also coached at both Western Carolina and as defensive coordinator at Elon.

I like it!!!!

Here is his bio from when he was an assistant at Duke: http://www.goduke.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=157398

I'm very impressed that Clawson was able to land two FBS DCs to fill assistant positions.

Sam Houston State went undefeated until getting beat 65-7 by eventual champ JMU.

I do too. And honestly, we needed some diversity in the staff.

Like that he is another guy that has played football and gone to school at a great academic school as well so he can speak to the benefits of that kind of environment in a place like wake.

Yep, good to have the private school experience, but I wouldn't be caught dead referring to dook as a great academic school....

I agree. This might be the most highly qualified staff that we have had (on paper)?

Yes. Not to mention getting a former FBS OC and AAC ST coach as ST coach.

All the new hires are young guys from their mid-30s to mid-40s with a ton of quality experience. Got to feel good about the changes.

By the way, Sawvel seems to like it in Winston.
