Losses/returners had a 3.0 ppg minimum cut-off.
Newcomers include transfers (subject to the 3.0 ppg cut-off) and top-100 ESPN recruits.
Transfers are always the hardest to track, so corrections are welcomed, particularly on that front.
I’ve marked potential early-entries with an asterisk, and have categorized them as returners or losses based on the Draft Express mock—first-rounders leaving, second-rounders staying.

Teams That Should Be Better

Miami 21-12 (10-8), First Round
Returners: Ja’Quan Newton (13.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 3.4 apg); Bruce Brown (11.8 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 3.2 apg); Anthony Lawrence, Jr. (6.8 ppg, 3.8 rpg); Dejan Vasiljevic (6.0 ppg); Dewan Huell (5.8 ppg, 3.1 rpg); Evuka Izundu (4.2 ppg, 3.0 rpg)
Losses: Davon Reed (14.9 ppg, 4.8 rpg); Kamari Murphy (7.1 ppg, 7.3 rpg)
Newcomers: Lonnie Walker (SG, #18); Chris Lykes (PG, #46); Deng Gak (PF, #92)
Miami loses two good players, but has a great recruiting class and a lot of talent coming back. Larranaga has done a tremendous job there.

Georgia Tech 20-15 (8-10), NIT
Returners: Josh Okogie (16.1 ppg, 5.3 rpg); Ben Lammers (14.4 ppg, 9.3 rpg); Tadric Jackson (11.9 ppg); Justin Moore (4.4 ppg)
Losses: Quinton Stephens (10.5 ppg, 7.7 rpg); Josh Heath (5.6 ppg, 4.4 apg)
Newcomers:
Pastner looks to build on a successful first season with his top three scorers all returning.

Boston College 9-23 (2-16)
Returners: Jerome Robinson (18.7 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 3.4 apg); Ky Bowman (14.3 ppg, 4.8 rpg); Jordan Chatman (8.6 ppg); Nik Popovic (6.1 ppg, 3.5 rpg); Ty Graves (4.8 ppg)
Losses: A.J. Turner (8.4 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 3.0 apg)(transfer); Connar Tava (5.9 ppg, 5.4 rpg); Mo Jeffers (5.5 ppg, 5.6 rpg)
Newcomers:
Is there reason for hope in Boston College? Barring a slew of early entries, their top five scorers all return for next year. Not anymore, with Turner's transfer.

Teams That Should Be About the Same

Louisville 25-9 (12-6), Second Round
Returners: Quentin Snider (12.4 ppg, 4.1 apg); Deng Adel (12.1 ppg, 4.5 rpg); Ray Spalding (5.9 ppg, 5.5 rpg); Anas Mahmoud (5.7 ppg, 4.0 rpg); V.J. King (5.5 ppg)
Losses: Donovan Mitchell* (15.6 ppg, 4.9 rpg); Jaylen Johnson (8.0 ppg, 5.8 rpg)*; Mangok Mathiang (7.8 ppg, 6.0 rpg); Tony Hicks (3.7 ppg)
Newcomers: Brian Bowen, (SF, #13); Malik Williams (PF, #29); Darius Perry (PG, #51); Jordan Nwora (PF, #87)
Mitchell is likely gone, but all three early declarants have left their options open, and Louisville would look like a national title contender if they come back. We’ll see.

Notre Dame 26-10 (12-6), Second Round
Returners: Bonzie Colson* (17.8 ppg, 10.1 rpg); Matt Farrell (14.1 ppg, 5.4 apg); Rex Pflueger (4.7 ppg); Temple Gibbs (4.7 ppg); Matt Ryan (3.6 ppg); Martinas Geben (3.1 ppg, 3.4 rpg)
Losses: V.J. Beachem (14.5 ppg, 4.1 rpg); Steve Vasturia (13.1 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 3.3 apg)
Newcomers: D.J. Harvey, Jr. (SF, #47)
Two big losses from an already not-so-deep team, but they’ve suffered more serious losses each of the last two seasons and just keep rolling along, so I’m not counting them out.

Virginia Tech 22-11 (10-8), First Round
Returners: Chris Clarke (11.4 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 3.3 apg); Ahmed Hill (11.4 ppg, 3.2 rpg); Justin Robinson (10.4 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 4.8 apg); Justin Bibbs (9.2 ppg); Ty Outlaw (6.3 ppg); Khadim Sy (4.0 ppg)
Losses: Zach LeDay (16.5 ppg, 7.3 rpg); Seth Allen (13.3 ppg, 3.3 apg)
Newcomers: Nickeil Alexander-Walker (SG, #25); Wabissa Bede (PG, #80)
Good news: You return all five starters. Bad news: Neither of your top two scorers started. I feel like Clarke’s recovery from injury will be a big factor here.

Wake Forest 19-14 (9-9), First Four
Returners: Bryant Crawford (16.2 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 5.5 apg); Keyshawn Woods (12.5 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 3.5 apg); Dinos Mitoglou (8.9 ppg, 6.1 rpg); Mitchell Wilbekin (7.0 ppg); Brandon Childress (6.6 ppg)
Losses: John Collins* (19.2 ppg, 9.8 rpg); Austin Arians (8.5 ppg)
Newcomers: Chaundee Brown (SG, #31)

NC State 15-17 (4-14)
Returners: Abdul-Malik Abu (11.8 ppg, 7.0 rpg); Torin Dorn (9.5 ppg, 4.6 rpg); Omer Yurtseven (5.9 ppg, 4.4 rpg); Markell Johnson (4.0 ppg)
Losses: Dennis Smith, Jr.* (18.1 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 6.2 apg); Terry Henderson (13.8 ppg, 3.1 rpg)(6th year denied); Maverick Rowan (12.0 ppg, 3.7 rpg)*; Ted Kapita (4.3 ppg, 3.4 rpg)*
Newcomers: Al Freeman (9.7 ppg)(Baylor); Lavar Batts (PG, #96)
The talent will clearly be worse next year, even if State manages to land some recruits or a grad transfer, but the coaching change alone should be enough for them to tread water, or even improve.

Teams That Should Be Worse

UNC 29-7 (14-4), 33-7 (National Champs)
Returners: Joel Berry, II (14.4 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 3.7 apg); Kenny Williams (6.2 ppg, 3.3 rpg); Theo Pinson (5.9 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 3.7 apg); Luke Maye (5.1 ppg, 3.8 rpg)
Losses: Justin Jackson* (18.1 ppg, 4.7 rpg); Kennedy Meeks (12.7 ppg, 9.1 rpg); Isaiah Hicks (12.4 ppg, 5.7 rpg); Tony Bradley* (7.5 ppg, 5.3 rpg); Nate Britt (4.7 ppg)
Newcomers: Cameron Johnson (11.9 ppg, 4.5 rpg)(Pitt transfer); Jalek Felton (SG, #24)
Big departures in Chapel Hill, as they lose most of their giant frontline.

Florida State 26-9 (12-6), Second Round
Returners: Terance Mann (8.4 ppg, 4.5 rpg); P.J. Savoy (5.5 ppg); Trent Forrest (4.9 ppg); C.J. Walker (4.9 ppg); Brian Angola-Rodas (4.6 ppg); Christ Koumadje (4.4 ppg)
Losses: Dwayne Bacon* (17.2 ppg, 4.2 rpg); Jonathan Isaac* (12.0 ppg, 7.8 rpg); Xavier Rathan-Mayes* (10.6 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 4.8 apg); Michael Ojo (4.9 ppg, 3.2 rpg); Jarquez Smith (4.4 ppg)
Newcomers: M.J. Walker (SG, #25); Ikey Obiagu (C, #56)
I’m breaking my Draft Express rule to put Bacon in the “Losses” column due to the tone of his announcement. Fortunately, 10th-year senior Rathan Mayes will still be around. ETA: Or maybe not. Looks like a down year for the Noles.

Duke 28-9 (11-7), Second Round
Returners: Grayson Allen (14.5 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 3.5 apg)
Losses: Luke Kennard* (19.5 ppg, 5.1 rpg); Jayson Tatum* (16.8 ppg, 7.3 rpg); Frank Jackson* (10.9 ppg); Amile Jefferson (10.9 ppg, 8.4 rpg); Matt Jones (7.0 ppg); Harry Giles (3.9 ppg, 3.8 rpg)
Newcomers: Wendell Carter (PF, #4); Trevon Duval (PG, #5); Gary Trent, Jr. (SG, #7); Jordan Tucker (SF, #40); Alex O’Connell (SG, #84)
It’s an exodus in Durham! It's a hell of a recruiting class coming in, but precious little coming back.

Virginia 23-11 (11-7), Second Round
Returners: Devon Hall (8.4 ppg, 4.4 rpg); Kyle Guy (7.5 ppg); Isaiah Wilkins (6.8 ppg, 6.0 rpg); Ty Jerome (4.3 ppg); Mamadi Diakite (3.8 ppg); Jack Salt (3.7 ppg, 4.1 rpg)
Losses: London Perrantes (12.7 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 3.8 apg); Marial Shayok (8.9 ppg)(transfer); Darius Thompson (6.2 ppg)(transfer); Jarred Reuter (3.8 ppg)(transfer)
Newcomers: Nigel Johnson (11.3 ppg)(Rutgers)
The unexpected (to me) transfer of Shayok, who would have been UVA’s leading returning scorer, is a major blow. Where will the scoring come from?

Syracuse 19-15 (10-8), NIT
Returners: Tyus Battle (11.3 ppg); Taurean Thompson (9.2 ppg, 3.8 rpg); Frank Howard (4.5 ppg);
Losses: Andrew White, III (18.5 ppg, 4.6 rpg); Tyler Lydon* (13.2 ppg, 8.6 rpg); John Gillon (10.5 ppg, 5.4 apg); DaJuan Coleman (5.6 ppg, 4.8 rpg); Tyler Roberson (5.3 ppg, 4.9 rpg)
Newcomers:
There’s some confusion on whether or not Lydon has signed with an agent, but he appears to be gone. Boeheim is sticking around for this?

Clemson 17-16 (6-12), NIT
Returners: Shelton Mitchell (10.8 ppg, 3.6 apg); Marcquise Reed (10.0 ppg); Elijah Thomas (7.5 ppg, 4.2 rpg); Donte Grantham (7.3 ppg, 4.3 rpg); Gave DeVoe (7.1 ppg)
Losses: Jaron Blossomgame (17.7 ppg, 6.3 rpg); Avry Holmes (10.3 ppg); Sidy Djitte (6.5 ppg, 7.7 rpg)
Newcomers: Mark Donnal (3.9 ppg)(UM transfer)
Always tough to categorize those teams with a record significantly worse than their level of performance. I’m putting Clemson in the “Worse” category even though I’d expect a similar record next year.

Pittsburgh 16-17 (4-14)
Returners: Ryan Luther (5.7 ppg, 3.9 rpg)
Losses: Michael Young (19.6 ppg, 6.8 rpg); Jamel Artis (18.2 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 3.3 apg); Cameron Johnson (11.9 ppg, 4.5 rpg)(grad transfer); Sheldon Jeter (8.1 ppg, 7.3 rpg); Chris Jones (7.2 ppg, 3.0 rpg)
Newcomers:
Pitt is also being hit by a bunch of transfers, now including 3rd-leading scorer Cameron Johnson. Last one out turn off the lights.

This thread makes me want to go back to previous years to see how you did, OGB.

Great stuff.

Picture still is not clear with:

- Post-grad transfers
- Who will and will not leave for the NBA draft
- April signing period with coaching changes leaving highly ranked players again open to recruit

Pitt is in free fall. They peaked under Stallings with 14th place finish. Going into this season, Pitt had made the NCAAs 11 times in 13 years with an Elite 8 and two other Sweet 16s. Now they are fighting to stay ahead of BC.

That was pretty damn on point. Nice work, OGB.

Really? I though he was off. Only two out of seven teams that should be better were actually better. I guess you could count BC but they couldn't be worse. No harm though. Nobody could have foreseen how bad Giles and Bolden would be or how bad State would suck despite having some new talent. All four teams that should be worse were at least as good if not better.

Glancing quickly at KP ratings from last year to this year, it seems like he was generally correct. Ones he missed on were ones everybody missed on (State and Pitt - plus his Pitt had a caveat on Stallings and wooooof)

Yeah, I was thinking it was pretty much accurate with the exception of Pitt and NCSU, which everyone whiffed on.

Just a friendly reminder that Kevin Keatts was an assistant coach and recruiter at Louisville when they were paying prostitutes to have sex with visiting recruits, and he left Louisville at a very convenient time.

Say Hey, have you been been hanging with Harv and a bong? He had seven in the "Teams That should Be Better". Four of them crapped their pants (Pitt, BC, State, Cuse).

BC improved 50 spots in KenPom, which is clearly better. Apart from that, you're right. It was a real long shot for those teams to come through!

They didn't come through and BC still came in last in the ACC.

My bad, you get a participation trophy for trying.

He said State "Should be Better". He is correct.

When Yurtseven becomes eligible, State should be a borderline Top 10 team. Well, assuming he's as good as people say he is.

OOOOOOPPPPPPPPSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!

But, no, my predictions were not particularly good last year. Better luck this time around

Before the season many had him as a lottery pick and he's a stiff. Thus my statement stands. He wasn't anywher near as good as he was advertised.
