Preemptive Wake/Kansas TV thread

Apparently we don't get to play teams like Kansas very often and we should all be huddled around the internet on Thanksgiving to watch this.

Newflash, we aren't Campbell. We play Duke and UNC multiple times a year. This isn't a once in a lifetime chance to see a decent basketball team. Talk about LOWF. Geez

Wow. I'd be just as interested if we were playing UNC Charlotte. I like watching the Deacs, no matter who we are playing, or who our coach is. Can't say I always finish the games, but trying to find a stream of your squad playing is normal??? Especially when Some folks thanksgiving is not very fun (in laws).

Great scenario here, guys. I have the game at my place (DTV 340). My daughters and families are heading to their Mom's (the ex) for dinner that day. She has TWC (too bad). Needless to say, the family is a huge Wake supporter. It's already starting: "Mom, let's eat early, so we can go over to Dad's to watch the game." I love holidays.

Exactly. My in-laws don't drink. Sober T-day, round 5 for me.

You may be the only one that cares....4 days away in a game where we will likely get thrashed and you start the thread....I appreciate your unrelenting enthusiasm.

You know we may get beat 4 straight days but it's not as likely as us winning a game or possibly two. This quote is sad and pathetic. Sure, Kansas will more than likely beat us handily. Does it really need to be mocked and brought up continually? This goes for everyone who will negrep and mock me for standing up for our team and program BEFORE the game has even been played. I mean come on fellas.

There are plenty who share this opinion, and even more that share the opinion about watching the Deacs no matter what - but don't waste your time typing about it on this board. Until we start beating good teams it'll fall on deaf ears. Which is understandable.

Anyone with Kenpom that can tell us the likelihood of winning none vs winning 1 vs winning 2? Our best chance at a win looks to be USC who are ranked a few spots down below us, but is by no means a cupcake on the level of the guaranteed wins we've had so far.

Also, is this the hardest bracket to read ever?

I don't disagree with that. Being in the minority I have to voice my unpopular boards opinion as much as possible. My biggest thing is that regardless of our coach or AD, I love the team and always have. I loved watching them when Rodney, Randolph and Timmy were in the black and gold. I loved watching them when we had Rafi,Broderick Hicks, ROK, Shoe, J-ho, Irvin Murray, etc. I liked watching James Johnson, Jeff Teague and Ish Smith. 20 years after Rodney Rogers, I like watching Devin Thomas, Travis Mckie, CMM and the current crop.

The decline of our basketball program has played a pretty big part of my life, my friends and family's life. Never will I, or the many other Wake fans I still know that don't post on these boards understand the invariable bashing, protesting and despicable hatred directed at our athletic leaders, for it's simply a sport.

Everyone have a great Thanksgiving and hopefully we can hang around a little while with Kansas.

I don't work for NASA, how the hell am I supposed to read that?

Uh, if the Game 9/11 boxes weren't there, it'd just be a standard bracket.

I'll take a stab at odds for winning each game, but it will be with a high margin of error since it's somewhat difficult to project what the odds will be for future games (and then is compounded by using expected win percentage which is guesstimated at each level).

First round games (current odds on KenPom):

Kansas (-13, 88%) v. Wake Forest
USC v. Villanova (-9, 82%)
Tennessee (-6, 75%) v. UTEP
Xavier v. Iowa (-3, 40%)

So through one round Wake's expected win percentage is .12. We then have an 82% chance of playing USC, a team we will almost certainly be very slightly favored over, and an 18% chance of playing Villanova, a team we would absolutely be an underdog to. I will say that the line on the USC game will be around ne, maybe two points.(we're around 30 spots better on KenPom). USC is within five spots of N.C. State and if you average the two predicted lines against N.C. State, you come out with Wake being a 1 point favorite and somewhere around a 55% favorite. I'll use 55/45 for the USC outcome.

Against Villanova, who is 22nd in KenPom, we're around 25% using a similar methodology and a 5.5 or 6 point underdog(Clemson this time). So I'll use 25/75 for the Villanova outcome. It gets really complicated with who we could play in the next round, but here are the expected chances through two games using these numbers to have each possible record (2-0, 1-1, 0-2)

2-0 (3.65%)
1-1 (52%)
0-2 (44.35)

Expected number of wins through two games is .593 using these numbers. I can do the next four games if you give me about twenty minutes.

We have a 2.46% chance of making the finals by beating Kansas and Villanova. We have a 1.19% chance of making the finals by beating Kansas and then USC (lower because of the worse odds that USC beats Villanova). The odds might be slightly higher actually for the Villanova portion because the numbers may be closer to 30% we beat them than 25%, but that's not a major difference.

Or not churchy enough?

I didn't say that very well. What I was trying to say is this thread was started 4 days before the game was even played. Usually these viewing threads start a day before or the day of. I was applauding/mocking the enthusiasm to watch this game.

I'm as die hard a Wake fan as you'll find. I was a little too much with my enthusiasm while I was a student. But I just can't even believe how far we have fallen and how bad things have gotten. I really lament that I view each game with such negativity. Glad you are able to maintain your enthusiasm.

Your post seems reasonable and sincere, and it is with that in mind that I will respond. First, I share your love and loyalty for Dear Old Wake Forest. Obviously being a bit older than you, my love goes back to the days of CD, Gil, Dickie Walker, and the Habeggers. I can assure you that the decline of our program has not affected you any more than it has many of us. But the purpose of my post is not to compare our disappointment in recent events and its personal impact.

You indicate that you do not understand the bashing and protesting because "it's simply a sport." I will speak only for myself, but my unhappiness with our AD and current basketball coach stems from the fact that they have intentionally misled the alumni and fan base in several critical areas and displayed a callous disregard for the fans' opinions. It is not simply about winning and losing games. Everyone likes to win, but long-time Wake fans have not been spoiled by that phenomenon. Our current AD has overseen a dramatic decline in our fortunes while being disingenuous with the programs' supporters. That goes to honesty, integrity and character and those issues transcend sports.

Our athletic leaders are charged with running the program. While they are in power, they can operate as they see fit. However, IMO they should be forthright about what they are doing. We have gotten to the point that they are occasionally not even straightforward about relatively insignificant things. That is why this long-time supporter of Wake Forest and Deacon athletics feels that it is time for a change. I hope this explanation helps your understanding of the situation. Many who share your opinion just dont know the truth behind the PR spin that is disseminated.

It hurts to go to a game in the Joel and see what has happened to our program. The decline is about more than poor performance on the court. It reflects the way the administration has handled things the last few years.

Happy Thanksgiving and go Deacs!

You forgot the step where you go to a computer store and get your computer cleaned from the spyware, malware, etc. you pick up. If it's free over the internet, that means someone is hacking your computer whether your virus software picks it up or not.
