• Welcome to OGBoards 10.0, keep in mind that we will be making LOTS of changes to smooth out the experience here and make it as close as possible functionally to the old software, but feel free to drop suggestions or requests in the Tech Support subforum!

Gimme you top five most likely

2) Turner
3) Kowalczyk
4) Mooney
5) Reed

(accidentally posted in the longer coaching search thread, am also re-posting here)

I don't see how the notion that Nova is a better job than Wake is LOL hilarious. I would agree they're pretty close, but I'd give the slight edge to Nova. That's just me. Nova has a richer basketball history than Wake. I could see the case for Wake too. What difference does it make though, Jay Wright ain't coming obviously.

Because we're in the ACC. Villanova plays in what is essentially a basketball-only conference. The growth of football grants us an incredible amount of resources. At the same time, Wake Forest basketball has historically been the profit driver of the athletic department. Now that we can potentially have both, that's a big deal. The Philadelphia Big 5 is dead. The Tobacco Road rivalries might not be what they once were, but they're far from dead. In short, we have more resources and play in a more elite conference. We have an arena that seats nearly 15,000 and we have no trouble selling out when we are good. Villanova has a 6,500 seat arena and plays a few extra games per year at the Wells Fargo Center - you know, sorta like how we used to have to play games in GSO.

1. Longerdonk
2. Amaker
3. White
4. Turner
5. Miller

After Shaka turns him down, I think he approaches Amaker, but I think there's a decent chance it doesn't work out, which is why I think Bonergan is most likely.

I'm going to go with Lonergan, Howland, Archie Miller, Amaker, and White

Hiring Amaker will not please the masses, but Ron clearly doesn't give a fuck about the masses, or as he calls them, "the lunatic fringe."

Wellman likes Craig Robinson, Stan Heath, Ken Bone and Oliver Purnell.
I mean, at least if we hire Ken Bone, we can always replace him with Jack McBrayer and no one would notice.

Reading all these lists makes me realize how terrified I am for what may be coming at the end of the week. I just don't understand why our athletic department thinks that it must always look for some diamond-in-the-fucking-rough, as if taking a mediocre coach and putting him in Winston-Salem under Ron's tutelage is all of a sudden going to make him Wooden or Dean.

If we want to win, we shouldn't spend our time looking for some mystical program-builder that may or may not pan out. We should just hire a fucking winner.

Exactly.

It's narcissism on Wellman's part. He believes that he is smarter than everyone else, thus he refuses to believe what other think about coaches instead substituting his own evaluation system that routinely comes up short. Furthermore, he feels that he can get more out of his coaches compared to his counterpart ADs. Wellman seemingly alternates between narcissism and reality with his hires, so let's just hope he's in one of his lucid periods during this hiring (and that more people than just him are involved).

Hopefully his time on the committee taught him what an actual coach looks like.

i'd say he's just risk averse which leads him to only hire guys with tons of experience. problem is that it's super hard to get a great coach who has already proven he's a great coach -- those guys typically are already snapped by bigger programs or are at a point where they don't want to leave for anything less than an elite program, which we are not.

Has anyone emailed Wellman with a list of five or six realistic candidates? It probably won't have much of an impact, but if several people send him similar lists a name or two could stick.

Great idea if you write in your list on the memo line of a giant check.
