Shaka Smart is not coming to Marquette; an apology

My name is Mike Cianciolo and I would like to apologize for my part in a story that originated with a tweet I made too quickly.

On Monday, March 24, I tweeted that Shaka Smart, currently the basketball coach at Virginia Commonwealth University, was to be named as the new head coach at Marquette University. As many of you know, the departure of Buzz Williams to Virginia Tech was big news and fans, alumni and reporters are waiting to hear who will replace him.

My tweet became the source members of the local media may have used as confirmation to make their own announcements that Mr. Smart was hired by Marquette. For this, I also apologize.

I would like to explain what happened on my end of this story. Sources I trusted told me the Marquette Athletic Department was going to hire Mr. Smart. Like any budding reporter, I became excited by the possibility of a scoop and jumped the gun in sharing the information on my personal Twitter account. I did not confirm the information before I tweeted it. I made the classic mistake, made by many who learn this same lesson, that double confirmation (or triple confirmation) is the most important thing a reporter can get before sharing any news.

I am currently a sophomore and the Sports Director for MUTV (a student-run television station) at Marquette University. My mistake will be a part of my education going forward and will inform my professional career as I pursue it. My mistake is embarrassing, but pretending it didn’t happen won’t ease my discomfort. I take responsibility for my error and for any part I played in the error others made as well.

Thank you for your interest in this story, in Marquette basketball and, I hope, for your forgiveness.

Not going to read through the 20 pages I've missed since 5 p.m. yesterday, but has Deman lost all credibility? Seriously, I wonder if the guy ever had any sources in the first place. He has thrown so much shit against the wall, and hardly any of it has stuck, but we eat it up since he talks like an insider and throws out so many juicy names - whether it's Izzo, Donovan, five-star recruits, or the always intriguing "mystery Euro." I don't know about you guys, but I'm going to start taking Deman's rumors with a grain of salt.

Starting? Seriously though... we're an announcement to me made today he would have been technically correct... until he changed his mind. Oops.

I think the problem is that Wake is so tight lipped with info that paying anybody for "insider" information is pointless. So it only appeals to tools like 81deac and MfDeacs so that they can pretend they are in some sort of inner circle.

Their athletic facilities are much better; football school so less pressure on the bball hc to perform; most popular school in Texas; wouldn't have to recruit as the third/fourth school in the state behind Duke, UNC, NC State.

Wake is a great job, don't get me wrong. Texas is the better job for sure though...

That's opposite of what I've read and heard from folks in/around VCU and Richmond. The general feeling has been that Shaka likes VCU because they don't have a football program and that if he leaves, it will be to somewhere that basketball is king. I just don't buy any argument about top tier coaches choosing a job that provides less pressure or less competition...these guys want to compete with and beat the best.

Maybe I'm reading too much between the lines, but I'd think that dude, and Marquette student media in general, would be VERY cautious about whatever was in that statement. And the headline, which admittedly could be out of Mike Cianciolo's control, clearly states that Shaka is out of play with MU.

Another factor going in our favor.

I keep seeing posts like this, even from DV7. Exactly what evidence is there "that the leadership at MSD...went big"?

There's very little evidence. But people who know things trust people who know things, and that's where we are. Could be a bunch of bullshit. I don't think it is, but it could be.

fair question and fair response, but I think the long period of silence from premier Wellman is pretty good evidence that they're trying to catch a big fish. If it was going to be Pat Kelsey from Winthrop or some other no name Bzdelikian hire, they could have put that together in a couple days.

Now obviously it could be that Wellman is just sitting around picking his nose and not working on anything at all, but even at my high level of cynicism it's hard to believe that he (and Hatch and the money people behind him) don't realize how important it is to get this right. It's all about the money, and I'm betting that the cratering of the basketball program is hurting Wake Will and that can't be allowed to go on.

For those of us on tapatalk can someone post the text of this tweet?

Enjoyed hearing Tony Dungy speak last night. Great message for the Wake Forest students.

@Rusty_LaRue would enjoy it better if you were watching it with Shaka Smart or a number of other real D1 coaches unlike trash that was here
