i don't even know that this needs to discussed, but doc rivers is coaching in dallas tonight and there appears to be no flights from anywhere close to marquette coming into the richmond private aiport

i think marquette is out of this or barely hanging on by a thread. i hope they just go away because they have been donks this whole process.
 
FWIW, this is from an interview with Maya Smart in a Richmond paper:

RM: Is [your daughter] Zora named for Zora Neale Hurston? What does her writing mean to you?

MS: My mother named me Maya, after Maya Angelou, a black woman who is also a pioneering poet, writer, playwright, civil rights activist, producer and director.

Ron said nothing specific in that interview to draw any conclusion on the status of the Smart offer. Maybe Shaka has declined and Ron is moving to Plan B. Maybe negotiations are continuing. Maybe Smart has said yes and the final papers are being drawn. Who knows, so everyone needs to calm down and see how this plays out without parsing every public statement Ron makes (since we know Ron will never speak candidly to the press). We will likely know nothing definite about a hire of the magnitude of Smart until the lawyers have already buttoned it up nice and neat. That is how our buddy Ron operates.

They have Doc, we've got CP. I have to believe a phone call from CP3 would be huge. If CP3 gets behind Shaka he could recruit anyone. CP3 was damn silent over the last four years.

But in this particular industry, with the potential for other candidates to fly off the market (particularly considering a comparable opening & candidate pool in the Marquette job), isn't it kind of an understood professional courtesy to make a relatively quick decision? I don't know that we should compare this to one of the mundane, low-profile, non $3M/year jobs that we all consider. I'd say he needs to give a decision within 48 hours of the offer, and if he wants to counter, needs to do so within 24 hours. If he tells Marquette "no" and makes us wait on his decision, they hire Howland and we might be stuck with our #3 or 4 option.

If the offer did indeed go out Wednesday morning, Wellman's fluff piece interview is an indirect way of putting some pressure on Shaka even though there is no specific timetable. For all Shaka knows, things are "progressing well" with other candidates and we are happy with the pool of selections we have at our disposal.

IOW, we're not totally tied to Shaka's star and have other solid options with which we are pleased. Not a bad idea. Shaka knows the clock is ticking and we can't wait forever, but we're willing to wait through the weekend at least. This is a big deal for Wake Forest as much as it is for Shaka if we really are sliding fat stacks under his nose. Not to mention we have to give Maya time to take a tour of Maya Angelou's home down the street from campus this weekend.

Someone get Oprah on the phone ASAP!!
