The guy tweets endorsements for Burger King. Money matters to him. He's not abnormal for wanting to make as much money as he can.

I'm starting to think Manning stays at Tulsa. He's got a very young squad, he'll get a nice raise with little pressure. If he's successful he gets to jump to a bigger program in a year or two. I think coaches are looking at Wake and seeing a weak foundation (regardless of what we think, most coaches are going to assume our talent level isn't great), overbearing standards for recruiting, pressure from fans and ridiculous competition with L'Ville coming in next year. We were smart to aim high because a big name with a huge salary could probably deal with the situation, but a younger coach who is trying to establish himself might see this as a lose-lose despite the uptick in salary.

Well then we must either lure a coach out of retirement or find a really good high school coach.

Also, considering his age (47), if he fucks up at Wake his coaching career is pretty much over.

RW reports to Hatch who reports to the Board. Fucking irresponsible if they are cutting 1.8 million dollar checks for Danny Manning.
It's not irresponsible if the alternative is Russell Turner for $1.2M or whatever. If Manning is the best candidate that's willing to take our money, quibbling over a few hundred thousand a year is foolish.

Random question:

If you had a choice today would you rather have Danny Manning or Andy Einfield approach the podium as the new coach? Last year the majority of fans were all about getting rid of [Redacted] and bringing in The Einfield family. Today I w/o a doubt would prefer Manning so each year is really just a crap shoot when you are hiring a coach that hasn't already reached an elite level.

???

contracts also aren't what they used to be

the bigger the job, the bigger the price tag

Well duh! And your point is??? My point was we are so desperate we have to now pay a premium for anyone to want to come to Wake...:tear:

Charlie Hannema ‏@CharlieHannema 1m
Source tells @NewsOn6 sports: TU offered Danny Manning $1.2 million salary, raises for assistants and "improved travel." #TulsaMBB

:couch:

Seriously, though. It's obvious at this point that Wellman and [ ] have done serious damage to this program. That means we have less ability to compensate a prospective hire in "program value" and will have to make up for it in dollars. We're going to over pay for Manning. We're going to over pay for whoever we get, and we're going to have to deal with it if we want to have any hope of climbing out of this mess.

I think 1-1.5 is reasonable for someone like Manning to get him to leave his current digs for here and don't have a problem paying for that premium to get someone to come.

Nobody would have really cared if we paid Shaka, Howland, or Marshall 2.5 million though I don't think. Maybe I'm wrong.

Certainly not wrong as far as I'm concerned. If Idiot was being paid $1.3MM then Shaka, Howland or Marshall are/were certainly worth double that. I just personally hope we don't stretch and 'settle' with Manning instead of really being smart about this and getting an excellent hire and fixing the real problem instead of panicking and making a last-minute decision under less than optimal conditions.

I think Manning will be fine, but he is not an A+ hire. Someone else rated him a C to C- hire and I think that's about right. Hell, Battle would be at least a C- coach IMHO, so why not promote from within and spend an entire year coordinating efforts with a professional search firm instead of relying on someone who has proven themselves completely incompetent with this entire process over the last seven years (Dino should have never been made the head coach and inked to a contract longer than a year, and then we all know what happened next...).

Wellman is officially public enemy number one and for good reason. The guy has destroyed our basketball program with terrible hires and culture misdirection and looks like he's about to make a one-man decision again after whiffing on multiple top candidates that said no. When does he start to realize that maybe HE'S the reason they're not interested in the job?

At this point we're going to have to overpay anyone remotely qualified. We might as well pay a few extra hundred grand to get Manning than to have to stoop to another tier of coaches for a cheaper price.

It's not "rational" to talk about facts? The fact is Howland was given one of the biggest buyouts in recent High D1 history one year after having the #1 recruiting class in the country. This is indisputable.

Another fact is he burned a lot off AAU bridges. It's also a fact that AAU coaches help in recruiting.

What's not rational is to dismiss these indisputable facts.

There seems to be a massive disconnect here. Since Howland was able to bring in the #1 recruiting class, wouldn't it stand to reason that the status of the bridges in the Southern Cal AAU scene didn't hamper his recruiting that much?

Well then we must either lure a coach out of retirement or find a really good high school coach.

Need to hire Howard West. He won a few state titles at RJ Reynolds in the late 90s-earl 00s, jumped ship and resurrected the brand new Reagan program in 05-06, and now is coaching at FCDS. The dude has over 500 career HS wins. Total stretch, but would be cool to see.

If the options we have are Manning for more than 1.5 and Turner for 1.2 then Wellman fucked up. Xavier has Mack for 800k.

Howland? Did we offer Marshall $3M? Why are we in a fucking bidding war with Tulsa? This is just such an embarrassment on so many levels. Clean out and get these clowns out of there.

Bobby Cremins! He said recently that Larry Brown's return to college bball has made him think about coaching.

Yeah not to get off topic, but it isn't like we've had a SoCal AAU pipeline.

is it just me or does it seem like danny manning isn't really convinced that he can handle the acc? seems to lack some coaching confidence or something

Who is the next tier? Moton, Hurley, some assistant coaches, Turner (my least favorite candidate).
