sorry to break up the radical english discussion - i have a real question.

if you realized a restaurant overcharged you ($35 meal rung up as $50), do you just let it go?
if you questioned the price at the initial time of the transaction and the cashier said "Yup." when you said "really?" do you still let it go? (this is a place where you order/pay, then they bring you your stuff)

I know the answer is "yes, let it go. it's $15." but it's more the principle of it. Plus, their receipts aren't itemized so there's no 'proof.'
This is what's grinding my gears this morning.

Yo lbe, how is that legal Oregon recreational weed?

Personally, a day later I'd chalk it up to a lesson learned and let it go- if you think there's a problem, it's much easier to get things fixed right then and there.

However, if its really going to bother you, head back today and let them know. Any good manager will hand you $15, even it he doesn't really believe you.

I mean, it will bother me because lately i've been carrying grudges like whoa, but I think I'll just let it go and be extra annoying/doing math at the register next time.

A lot of the rhet./comp. departments in the US are housed in English departments.

Yeah, I've noticed that. Most of the comm programs I've applied to are separate. I think I'm dubious about how such programs study argumentation theory, political traditions and modern modes of address.

I think $15 is a fairly substantial amount (esp when it's essentially an overcharge of 40%).

Could you bring the un-itemized receipt and explain what you did order and make the argument that way?

Agreed that a good manager should not put up a fight.

I'll ignore the pointed insult.

If you think that an employee is surreptitiously adding a tip or overcharging you after the purchase, call the manager. You'll be refunded, and somebody needs to be fired.

In your case, it seems as if they charged you incorrectly at the point of purchase. That's something you probably should have dealt with when you were there. Maybe by asking for an itemized receipt then and there? Not much that you can do about it now. I agree with District.

Yeah, I probably could and I bet they would honor it, but I don't have an ability to really do it today and I think waiting any longer than a day would look kind of petty on my part.

I more came here looking for the justification that I'm not crazy for being annoyed about it.

OK - BACK TO THE GRE.

I did pretty well on the standard GRE, but I think a subject-specific GRE (in English) would slay me.

We can take this "radical English discussion" to PM if you'd like, but I can't really accurately describe to you the methodological/pedagogical/practical differences between my institution's graduate programs in Radio-Television-Film / Communications / English / Rhetoric / American Studies. Except that you can pursue any modes or types of "argumentation theory, political traditions and contemporary modes of address" in an English department and that their degrees are fully-funded (whereas the other degree-programs are not).

I am hiking 28 miles on the Appalachian Foothills Trail tomorrow in the rain to raise money for Make-A-Wish....along with at least one other poster. If you'd like to pledge to help grant wishes let me know and I'll PM a link to their website!

It's really not so difficult. Give me ten minutes, and I could give you some pretty easily identifiable indicators. Townie's example is a bit of hyperbole: in no way could anyone identify the differences in English between decades (without identifying the actual source text -- though perhaps that's what they're looking for).

that was my point, if you couldn't identify the source text, you weren't going to identify it by year

Hm? I was straight out of the MA, so I'd only had a single additional year.

maybe i'm conflating different things, wasn't there some second baccalaureate or is that the same thing

I remember there being a thread for this back in the day (I bet df07 has one even), but this commercial is hilarious:

this was on shark tank a while back. I have taken to propping my feet up on sturdy trash cans when I'm having "trouble."
