Official '15-16 NBA Season Thread: THEY WON ONE FOR THE LAND

Why are we so sure he's retiring after this one?

The Spurs can't win if he's their third best player (as he was last night), but he can still provide an above average contribution in 20 minutes a game.

Does anyone else think these Spurs 'dynasty' teams are a little like the dominant Braves teams of the '90s - though much more successful? They seem to be built for regular season success. Great fundamentals, solid defense, etc. - but susceptible to bad match-ups and other teams getting hot for the short term and taking them out of the playoffs.

Wish Duncan had retired after last season.

Don't really get that sentiment. Spurs finished this year with the best regular season record in club history. Last year ended with a first round loss to the Clippers; how is that any better than a second round loss to the Thunder?

Huh?

No

Except for those 5 rings, of course.

Haven't checked yet but are OWGs killing Pop for being a bad loser like Cam?

The Thunder are loaded with talent. Donovan is a smart coach who is figuring this out as he goes.

They went through this on the broadcast last night, but here goes the Thunder playoff history since 2011:

2011 - Very young Thunder team loses to the NBA Champs Mavs in the Western Conf. Finals (2-1 in playoff series with Westbrook and KD)
2012 - Thunder takes the next step winning the Western Conference beating in order: the Mavericks (sweep), the Lakers (4-1), and the Spurs (4-2). Thunder then lost to the NBA Champion Heat. (3-1 in playoff series with Westbrook and KD)
2013 - Thunder lose Harden; Thunder have the best record in the West 60-22; favored to again face-off against the Heat in the NBA final; Westbrook gets hurt in the NBA playoffs first round; without Westbrook, the Thunder lose in the West Semis; (1-0 in playoff series with Westbrook and KD)
2014 - Thunder finish with 2nd best record in the West; beat Memphis and the Clippers in the first two rounds; lose to the NBA Champion Spurs in the Western Conference finals. (2-1 in playoff series with Westbrook and KD)
2015 - Durant breaks his foot; Thunder miss the playoffs.
2016 - Thunder finish with the third best record in the West behind the record breaking seasons of the Spurs and the Warriors. (2-0 in playoff series with Westbrook and KD)

Since 2011, the Thunder are very impressive 10-3 in playoff series when they have Westbrook and KD, and all three losses were to the eventual NBA Champion. Also, although they don't have Harden, argument could be made that this is the deepest (and definitely the most physically imposing) of any of the Thunder teams over the last 6 years. If this team can avoid last minute meltdowns, very capable of beating GS and Cleveland to win it all.

The best thing about Billy D is that he is not Scott Brooks, who is very stupid.

good post. this team scares me. they've been there. they will be a handful on the offensive glass. thankfully threesus has risen, and i have a hard time believing anyone could beat us 4 times in 7 games the way he's playing.

Interested to see if Warriors stay big or play a lot of death line up which will get destroyed on the glass.

the spurs shouldn't be scared of either of you guys, though

Well, I said they were much more successful - 5 championships to one. The point was, with their perennial regular season dominance, they could have been expected to win even more. And I know they were SO close to winning a couple more. IIRC, they said this is 4 out of the last 8 years they have lost to a lower seeded team with home court advantage. That is disappointing. I guess I am just sad and frustrated.

would you have been happier if they lost in the next round as a lower seeded team with out home court?
