FSU Game Review / Bye Week and Army Game Thread

Did we run outside the tackles once all season? I can't remember a single time. Jet sweeps or misdirection/counter plays would be much appreciated, rather than the 2 second delayed zone read...

Fixed but kinda joking. I think Tyler Bell had an run outside left tackle, but that's it. We run to the inside and pass to the outside.

I think some of that is a height issue and an inability to get Wolford the passing lanes he needs to see he middle of the field. Rolling him out wouldn't necessarily help either because it cuts off one part of the field and allows the rushers to pursue.

This is something that two different fans pointed out to me in the offseason. They told me that Wolford always went to the sidelines with his throws because he couldn't see the middle of the field that well. Or maybe the staff was using sideline routes for that reason. I'll leave it up to others to decide if they think that is valid.

I do believe that other teams focus on putting traffic in front of Wolford for that reason.

"Tyler Bell is again becoming a presence on passing downs. When Cade Carney is in the game, there is a good chance it’s a run play. When Tyler Bell is in the game, there is a good chance that it is a pass play."

Seems sub-optimal. Is Carney not a good blocker despite his size?

Carney seems to be a fine blocker when he is in the right position. On the first sack of Wolford I did feel like he got caught in the wrong place. The blitzing LB got a clean shot on Wolford that I thought he shouldn't have had. That is just one play though.

Does anyone know why our offense is so unbelievably limited? Is it talent, smarts, size, or what? I understand a game plan to shorten the game, play good D, win the TO battle. We did all that. But when its a 2-score game halfaway through the 4th quarter, it may be a good time to adjust the O.

I still can't believe how even the elite teams (Alabama may be the exception) that I've watched play this year. All run options, multiple spreads/sets, motion in the backfield, pitches, counters, shovel passes. misdirection, halfback option, etc, etc, etc.

We're still running the read option in the 4th quarter with 90% handoffs to a tailback who had 35 yards for the game.

Also, your LSer has given up major points and centering the ball for FGs has been off. Weaver is missing because setter is having to reposition a high or inside snap too often and not getting the ball placed well.

Coach Clawson, you gotta plan better. Everyone adjusts at the half. You so did a disservice to the D by laying goose eggs after major TOs, 2 in the red zone. Score should have been reversed....we should have been on the winning end 17-6.

I'm sick that they called holding on the return. I would feel better if someone could verify that there was definitely a hold. Because that was a momentum killer. Only so many chances to beat FSU and this was one of them.

I always figured Bell was the passing RB because he was the better receiver in addition to be a decent blocker.

Lol. It's talent and size. Both Wake and FSU played about the same quality of game. They're bigger, faster, and stronger than we are. They win the game.

We have to severely out perform a team like that to win. We didn't do it.

It's not on the offensive scheme.

Everyone talking about running more outside. We don't have the speed to compete with their Defense.

You wanna run some mis-directions? That might work from over-pursuit, but all those other plays scream turnover to me against that D

Again, it's wasn't that we didn't try to run outside against FSU, it's we don't try to run outside against anybody. No plays for the running backs to run outside, no jet sweeps, etc., and sometimes you need to do those things if only in token fashion to keep the defense honest.

First time I've read the boards since the game and I seem to be in the minority that thinks the game went pretty well on Saturday. Defense is a solid unit with some NFL-caliber talent while the offense continues to languish behind. Thought both interceptions, while partially on Wolford, were on the receivers just as much if not more. First pick Wolford was throwing to a spot and the defender just beat the receiver there. The second one was underthrown a little but was a 50/50 ball that our receiver lost out on.

I'm really not high on our younger receivers, but I'm sure with time and experience they'll improve. Just frustrating at times.

Like posted earlier on this thread, the biggest difference was our O-line while improved, is still where it can hold up against defensive fronts like FSU or Clemson or even State. Everywhere else, I thought we matched up pretty well all things considered.

It's low risk. All our runs are up the middle. Clogging the middle busts up the read option and disrupts passing lanes.

Wolford doesn't have the pocket presence to find a passing lane to the extent any exist.

I will give him credit for turtling to either take the sack or tuck and run instead of throwing a bad pass. That's been a huge improvement.

As far as WR, the one simple trick Clawson could use to improve the offense is to keep Lewis in the game and keep Washington out.

So Grobe had way more talent than FSU in '06 when we won 30-0?! I don't think so.

It was: believe in your O, practice hard until you perfect it, run your O. I'd say that '06 FSU team may have been more talented than the current. Coming into the game, Xavier Lee was more of threat at QB than Francois, although we forced FSU to yank him in the second half. We forced him into TOs much like State did with Watson Saturday. Oh, and our snaps and holds for kicks/punts were lot better then, too.... :)

We had the better team and better football players, you've never convince me otherwise. FSU still had great athletes, but we had the better teams during that 3 year run, as well as the better coach. Xavier Lee wasn't even FSU's starter coming into that game, comparing him to Francois is an insult to Francois.

Anyone have 2 extras for the Army game? Plenty on StubHub (obviously) but I figured I'd ask here first.

I watched the game with 2 FSU fans and another impartial fan. We watched the return multiple times thanks to TIVO and tried to find the hold. Everyone agreed it was a horrible call and should have been a TD. Really makes me sick to my stomach.

Sickening yes, surprising no.

I hate calling out individual players, but our long snapper has been inexcusably bad this season, especially to be on scholarship

According to the game write up he was pulled in the second half.

The block in the back on a punt/kick return is the go to call in both the pro and college games.
