Wake Forest's own Tommy Elrod caught leaking football information to other teams

This is more like handing your drunk buddy your keys.

To be fair, Louisville didn't act quickly. This came out a month ago. They say on it.

Until yesterday, Wake had kept it as a "problem at Wake Forest" that was under investigation. Once Wake went public with the information about Elrod, Louisville's hand was forced. Their AD had to act. If they had been more stand up, you are correct, they would have said something about the time Wake made the initial announcement in November.

Elrod's not your common disgruntled employee who was let go. For christ's sake there was a coaching change; assistants are rarely retained as new coaches have their own men they want to bring with them. Also Elrod is an alum. If you can't trust an alum of your school and football program who can you trust? I do wish people would stop trying to "distribute blame" on anyone other than the guilty party.

The thing is, what purpose does undercutting Clawson serve? It's not like Clawson would be fired and Elrod would come on board as a head coach with his experience. Even Wellman isn't that much of a moron. The best he could hope for is to be brought on board as another assistant.

Are we saying that Wellman should have had the foresight to see Elrod was a rat when no one else in the world did? Seems like a high standard, even for someone as hated as Wellman.

I'm saying firing someone then giving them unrestricted access is very unusual.

Former player on one of the shows today said that the most egregious offense by Elrod is that it gave opposing players a chance to tee it up and take a player's head off if they knew the play was coming in his direction; good point.
And why are so many of the writers and analysts saying Elrod was "fired"; makes it sound like he was actually on Clawson's staff and was let go.

Right. And that's maybe why we waited until after Jackson won the Heisman and after Army-Navy.

Giving your radio broadcaster special access is not very unusual at all

I think that you're both right.

ETA: By which I mean that it's a very Wake problem to not rehire an assistant coach and then hire that coach to be a color commentator. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I can't imagine that happens often. It's not like Mark Jackson calling Warriors games.

It's naive to describe an ex-employee as just a radio broadcaster.

I assume they're investigating if he did anything shady in his job with the Wake endowment firm as well.

It seems as if he only shared information with former Grobe regime coaches. Not saying that he isn't undercutting Clawson because he probably is, but "helping out" his friends could play a significant part as well. Also not saying that's okay in the slightest, just pointing it out.

Also, blaming Wellman or Clawson for this is just beyond idiotic. Neither had any reason to suspect Elrod of doing this.

Yeah. He wasn't fired. He just wasn't retained by the new regime. Happens multiple times a year, every year.

Football is a business. Coaches know this and move on to the next gig. No biggie.

The college football analyst on ESPN @ midnight last night did a great job explaining how this is not abnormal at all.

Dinger is a former WF basketball assistant too. Most analysts have some connection with program they cover.

Not unusual at all for broadcasters to have access to confidential information about the team they are covering. This even happens at the NFL level when national broadcast teams attend practice and meet with coaches and players before games. Have heard of specific instances when broadcasters, not affiliated with the team knew when plays were going to be called in specific situations (including surprise onside kicks), and of course, the broadcasters were well aware that they could not share game plan information with the opposing team. To try to hang any of this on either the athletic department or the current WF staff or the players who knew Elrod is ridiculously misguided.

Are there people actually blaming Wellman and the AD for putting Elrod in a position where his morals could be compromised? Do you also blame Budweiser when someone gets a DUI?

OMG, Once DR gets the facts, look out Anheuser-Busch ! Your ass is getting SUED !

I think there are a lot of broadcasters who do games for their alma maters. He was a double Deacon, former football player in addition to being an ex employee

Most former assistant coaches go and get coaching jobs elsewhere so it's not really an issue.

My question again for people who don't think Wellman or Clawson bear any responsibility: How do we make sure something like this doesn't happen again?

Are there broadcasters, who are also alumni, who were fired from a coaching job at their alma mater and then offered a broadcasting job solely dedicated to covering the school that just fired them (also their alma mater)? I really don't think that happens often.

As for Ph's question - I can't imagine that Wellman (or any future Wake AD) will ever allow a fired coach to have the same degree of access to the program (or any degree of access for that matter) after they're fired.

I don't disagree with this statememt per se.

But the premise of your analogy is that the majority of people would not see the danger in his action. When in actuality, the majority of the people if not supermajority would see the danger in your premise. I can guarantee that if you searched the threads, there is not a single person suggesting that Elrod was the rat even with everyone knowing his coaching tenure and connections.
