2017 Football Recruiting

Does it hurt us with kids like Norwood that we don't have a DC yet?

I'm going to generalize, but I think when kids commit they base their decision on, in order of priority:

1. position coach
2. head coach
3. area recruiter
4. coordinator

Although I could see #1 and #2 being flipped for a lot of kids when the head coach is heavily involved in the recruitment (and a good recruiter).

Wake has position coaches in place for every position except LB. So everyone else will be spending time with the guy who will be coaching them directly.

I imagine facilities and how hot the girls are fall in there somewhere.

Yes. Sorry. I was really focused on the part of the decision that relates to the coaching staff.

Obviously game day atmosphere, facilities, tradition and school size are very important factors.

I saw that Chambers and Gardner are both off the roster. Bring in everybody, Dave.

I don't think it would be too much of a problem to find him some minutes on the hardwood.

If that's what it takes! Would be interesting to see DC and DM work that out.

The two sport athlete has happened at Wake in previous years. Rusty LaRue is probably the best known.

I thought Clawson said something early on that made it clear that he would not be OK with a two sport arrangement.

Out of the official visitors this weekend, I think Surratt is the most likely to commit. But it wouldn't surprise me at all to have more.

Rusty graduated over 20 years ago. Ed Kargbo and (I think) RD Montgomery are the last ones I remember and they were about 15 years ago.

For the more casual recruiting followers, a reminder of how commitment timing usually works on official visit weekend (not just a Wake). If the staff wants to discuss commitment with a recruit it generally happens in a one-on-one meeting at the end of the visit. Usually by 1pm or so at the latest. Some recruits take a little longer to put together their announcement tweets, but most of the official visit weekend commits from around the country are usually known by mid-afternoon or so. In some instances, the coaching staff may defer discussion of committing until an in-home visit the next evening. So there will be more commitments from around the country tomorrow night.

The first official weekend in January involves a difficult balancing act. For a recruit to commit, they typically would need to give up the remaining official visits that they have scheduled. All of Wake's visitors this weekend have other official visits scheduled, with the exception of Sage Surratt. For a staff to accept a commitment, they would need to take a spot away from someone else that may be scheduled to visit next weekend. Wake may be looking to take as few as 4 more commits (of course they may take more) and they have five uncommitted visitors this weekend alone. Plus Waydale Jones, Demetris Harris and OJ Tucker all expected next weekend. So it's complicated all the way around and reasonable to think that we may not see a lot of new commits today.
