2017 NBA Draft thread - JC drafted 19th to Atlanta, OUR... Hawks?

That has to be a marketing team's nightmare. You line up the sponsorship, the photo, and the description, and the guy can't even fill in the blanks.

Or is it genius? Easy opportunity to go viral and get your sponsorship out there. I'm sure it wasn't planned but it may work out just fine for the sponsor.

Wait, really? He shot 65% on FTs and rarely ever attempted a shot off the block.

Yes, which Cal then spun as look at how great of a sacrifice Bam made for the team to not showcase all of his talents during the season for the team's benefit.

As much as I don't like the Lakers, Magic has to get an at least a solid A for the last two days. If he had made a better pick than Kuzma, he would have gotten an A+. Turning Mosgov and Russell into Lopez, Hart and cap space was great. I think Hart is every bit as good as Russell. Getting Thomas Bryant in the second round is also big. He could turn into a solid player.

I'm guessing K's greed and selfishness cost Giles at least $15M over his first contract and possibly many times that by having him play rather that letting him sit out. I've read articles last fall and recently that said he would have been a Top 10 pick if he had simply sat out. It's highly unlikely he would have had the last injury had he not played.

JC losing money with each pick. One more year at WF and he would have likely been top 10. If he falls much lower...he may have made a bad decision.

How much money did you make your first three years out of college?

its not that simple. its also not a blanket statement but often when you go early it may mean more money but it could be a terrible situation. rather be in atlanta at 19 that sactown at 10.

By leaving now he gets another year at a higher pay rate.

arguing about whether JC made a mistake after getting drafted 19th is the dumbest, yet most predictable argument.

i won't use right or wrong decision, as some have take odd offense to that, but he clearly made a good decision entering the draft.

sure, he was a production pick not a potential pick that also limits his upside to come back to school. he doesn't have off the charts measurables, he'd be 20.8 instead of 19.8, and if his already prodigious production stays the same or only slightly increases he takes a hit. aside from injury concerns, there are no guarantees that he puts up better numbers next year. i sure as hell wouldn't trust ACC refs to not get me in foul trouble against Duke and UNC while also trying to prove to the NBA I can play better defense. I won't say coming back would have been the wrong decision, but it had limited upside against much more downside.

I'm pretty sure the rookie scale jumps significantly next year. Unless he got injured or his stock dropped he would have made more money in the long run.

Again, no "wrong" decision here (I probably would have locked in the 5 million rather than play the percentages) but a lot of bad arguments being made on this thread.

I think everyone is significantly downplaying the upside of not being in the best draft in 20 years.

JC had two good decisions in front of him. He took the more certain path, hard to blame him for that (though it hasn't stopped people in the past).

we don't really know how strong the 2018 draft is yet, but JC doesn't really have top 10 upside to come back. aside from the stud 5 stars and foreign studs, there are a handful of dudes that went back to school that were already ahead of JC this year in mocks (Robert Williams, Miles Bridges).

JC couldn't have gone to a better team for playing time. This could potentially be the best outcome for his long term financial position.

Kris Dunn, Buddy Hield and Taurean Prince all went in the top 12 last year at age 22.

When there aren't a ton of guys with high upside, teams turn to players that produce on a big stage in college.

Of the guys that came back that were ranked ahead of Collins, how many were there based on potential? Those are the guys who have to worry about dropping next year.
