Retired US Soccer / World Cup Thread (RIP)

Thank you for coming in to a thread to tell us how little you care about the subject of the thread.

Reply to this to prove my point. Or don't now that I showed you your hypocrisy. Kisses.

No hypocrisy. Honesty. I've tried to care. I care about Wake soccer and that's all grass fairy wise. My phone blew up all night about this game. I watched. Now I'm glad I don't have to anymore.

Time for a house cleaning at US Soccer. The quotes tonight did not make it sound like they understand that.

I was blasted on here when I had a meltdown because we hired Bruce Arena again, not that everything is his fault, but why go back to the girl who made your life miserable to marry her again? Doesn't make sense, and now we miss the only thing worth going to in Soccer, the World Cup. Well look at the bright side, Bruce has 4 more years to continue working his "magic". DISGUSTING

How do you all feel about the fact the USA was eliminated on a goal that never actually went in?

inexcusable refereeing mistake, but Panama would have scored again if they needed to

the US were eliminated because they got outworked and just flat out sucked in a game that meant everything to them

WAY too much time bitching about the field conditions and then scoreboard watching when all we needed to do was tie a dreadful team

Dude, who even gives a flying fuck about that goal. We had to WIN or DRAW vs. a country the size of San Diego and we lost. We 100% controlled our destiny and go beat the fuck off the field by XI players I've never heard of. It was their B team. I don't care if CR picked up the ball and threw it into the goal 15 times, this is 100% on nobody but us.

Beyond the players, there are three big things that stick out and honestly infuriate me

US Soccer Took Qualification for Granted
US Soccer went away from all the shit that gave us a great home field advantage last cycle. They literally TRIPLED the ticket prices for the Hex games, to the point where the AO section for the must-win Panama game didn't even sell out (small wonder when the tickets cost $80). They scheduled one of our biggest home games in a market where visiting fans would be half the stadium because it happened to be in a major media market. They stopped doing stuff like giving out scarves to all the fans. Why? Money. US Soccer tried to cash in on qualifying, figuring that any harm to home field advantage wouldn't matter because we'd qualify anyway.

US Soccer is Wayyyyyyyy Too Closely intertwined with MLS
The National Team needs to be operated as something completely separate from MLS. Instead the two have this incestous relationship that prevents the National Team from acting purely in its self-interest. We don't need a good MLS to have a good national team. Look at Iceland. Look at Belgium. Look at any number of other countries that succeed with shit domestic leagues. Having our best players playing in MLS is horrible for the National Team--that's never been more obvious than now. And leaving out players like Fabian Johnson to call in people like Zardes because of the MLS connection is inexcusable. Reading Bruce's comments after last night about how the USMNT will be fine because MLS is as strong as its ever been made me want to break something--MLS shouldn't even be on his mind, he's the fucking USMNT coach.

Do a Real Coaching Search
I said it when we hired Bruce that it was a horrible mistake to just crown someone our coach for the cycle just because of previous ties to US Soccer. We are a top 10 national team job. People want to live in the US. GO DO A REAL SEARCH AND GET AN ELITE COACH! This ties into the MLS point. US Soccer seems so caught up on getting someone who understands how the system works in the US. THAT SYSTEM JUST GOT US ELIMINATED FROM THE HEX. I want someone who's not afraid to blow things up and act purely in the interest of the National Team with no regard for MLS, college, anything. But instead we're going to hire Tab, or some MLS coach. It's insanity.

Excellent post, I agree with everything.

well said

Anyone who bitches about the playing conditions, hotel, etc. loses a game check

When Arena bitched about "hotshot European teams" and how they would handle conditions in T&T, he was implicitly telling his players, "Hey it's ok, I understand if you don't play well; anyone would struggle here!!" Fuck that. Talk like that is arrogant, it's condescending, and most importantly, it takes away from the task at hand. (see for example Jim Harbaugh's rant at Groves a few years ago; what an asshole he was, and what assholes U.S. Soccer looked like bitching about the conditions over the past few days)

I can't help but believe that if Arena had started Geoff Cameron and played an extra man in the midfield instead of three strikers and two wings, that the US would be going to Russia next year.

Funny that you mentioned WVa. I was thinking as the last few minutes wound down, and the realization set in that we were out of the World Cup entirely, that the entire country was going to get a taste of the experience of being a Wake Forest fan. This bitterness is something we all know well.

Funny you guys brought up WVa. That's exactly how this feels and the last time I've felt this way as well... I rarely agree with DV7, but for the life of me, needing 1 f'n point to make it to a world cup.. HOW IN JESUS NAME DO THEY NOT BRING IT!!!! Especially since all but four or five of them are older than 25. This may/will be the last chance most of them have at participating in a WC. That lethargic performance should bring change at the top. No excuses.

Ironic. Just a couple days ago, I was telling my Wife how Pulisic had a chance to go to 4 maybe 5 WCs if he stays healthy and gets as good as folks expected. Toss that out the window...

Don't care at all really. No excuse to leave our fate at the hands of an official after 10 matches.

+1. We didn't need anything except to get a single F'n POINT out of our game. Take care of business and that goal/game don't matter. It's on the USMNT not some random goal/not goal ref decision.

Honestly, if we can't beat T&T who had 1 win in the hex, we don't deserve to go to the WC.

And Arena has to go. I have never seen someone make so many excuses and then to have the gall to say it is part of the game and nothing needs to change with US Soccer. Clearly he isn't much of a soccer person as RESULTS are all that matters no matter how you may perceive things and we didn't get the result we needed. MLS might be great for creating fans and money for the sport, but a disaster for US MNT. Reality is our players skill level is not improving enough vs. prior years outside Pulisic and maybe Brooks/yedlin, but it is abundantly clear the island/smaller nation players have greatly improved and have grown in confidence with many of their players competing against US players regularly in MLS. To think both Panama and Honduras are going through and T&T was able to beat us speaks volumes. Something needs to change and while Jurgen might be as arrogant as they come I do think some of his approach was right on in that we have to encourage players to compete elsewhere in world where talent levels and approaches are much further along than MLS and try to bring them into the US MNT fold. How Cameron and Fabian Davis were left on the sidelines while Villafana was getting abused and Gonzo struggled is beyond me.

This sucks just as bad the next day...I was already making tentative plans to go to Russia next summer. As a 24 year old, it wouldn't have been that hard. Now next go around in 2022 friend's will likely be wifed up, with their kids or whatever.

I was ready for Klinsman to go, but I agree with the rest of y'all that Arena has to go now too. What are some of the names of realistic folks that you'd like to see as the new coach? For that matter, I'm still not impressed with Jill Ellis and want her gone as well.

Question about Howard. I know he's ancient. To me, that chip in the box wasn't savable. But don't most goalies make the save on that long shot? That was 1 of the longer goals I've seen where the goalie wasn't out of position. While it was a great shot, it looked to me like he reacted slowly.

Altidore was hot garbage out there.

Has he ever done anything in a big game? I know he has a decent goal tally, but they never seem to come in a big match. And I don't ever see him contribute in any way outside of goals. Poster boy for a mediocre MLS player
