Keys to next year’s FB team

Our running game could be special next year. We will have 4 very good backs, all a bit different. A very experienced and good oline. and a running QB to keep the backside honest. Colburn looks dynamic, I know our WR talent and depth might be as good as it's ever been, but I really think our offense will be great in the run game. I like less targets, but more big plays from the passing game next year as the defense will be forced to play up on our excellent run game.

I am a huge fan of Colburn (fuck you petrino) but I’m not convinced that the back with the highest upside is Arkeem Byrd. He also jumpstarted a lethargic offense on Friday in the one series he got to play in. I don’t get why Carney is above Byrd on depth chart.

When Cade is 100% I think he's our best RB. But it's a good debate to have. Colburn deserves to start, and I expect him to be a beast all year. Excited to see sophomore Byrd and to see Beal for the first time. I'm not sure who has the best hands, but with that much talent I hope we can get them more involved in the passing game. And more screen passes!

I think Colburn is our best back by far. He is deceptively fast and has good moves in space. I was hoping that he would get player of the game on Friday as he played a key part in our win. I too would like to see Byrd get several series a game as he brings even more speed than Colburn.

The keys to next year; replacing Wolford and finding a bunch of of defensive players.

Carney is too slow with this offense.

Yep. And he's not a short yardage guarantee either. I can't see Clawson installing a FB, but I could see Carney in an H-back role, especially if a clear TE1 doesn't emerge. The run game should be fine with Hinton running the option with Colburn, Byrd, and Beal.

Was Colburn hurt for the GT game? Just randomly looked at his log and noticed that he only had 1 carry. If he was healthy I imagine Clawson would like a mulligan on that one.

Not sure how you come to that conclusion, but the great thing about our stable of backs is that we have so many different options: the bruiser (Cade), a combo guy (Matt), and a couple of shifty, speedy guys in Byrd and Beal. Can't wait to see what they do behind an entire returning line of 4 seniors/1 junior

It was mediocre. #76 in scoring D, #113 in total D, but no other defense in the nation was on the field for 1,069 plays, despite being #76 on 3rd down D and #69 on 4th down D. Yards per play? #60. We gave up a lot of FGs and a median number of TDs. Basically, our defense made other teams work to get points. I think once our LB play improves, we'll get more stops.

Not the best stat but every bowl team we played except Louisville scored more in their bowl than they did against us.

It's hard to adjust your thinking about defense in the speed offense game. It's hard to get your head around winning a bunch of games 40 to 30.

Clawson should bring in Grad transfers at Quarterback, Kicker and Linebacker. Hinton is poor decision maker who does not have ability to check through his receivers. Can’t risk FG/PAT to Freshman whose longest HS FG was 40 yards. LB corps needs been thoroughly discussed here previously.

We hVen’t Seen Hinton play consistently since his freshman year. Plus he’s got spring and summer to work.

We will have 8 or 9 regular season wins next season. Great O-line, RB's & WR's. Will probably average 40 points per game and score in light speed like against Texas A&M and Syracuse games.

Myself and another Deac sitting behind me at the game were increasingly frustrated with the loose zone pass defense. On one occasion the TAM back ran out of the backfield to the flat and the ball was thrown when he got there and no Deac was within 10 yards. I understand "bend, don't break" between the 20s but it doesn't work when you give up as many points as we did (and I give TAM a lot of credit for that).

My concerns for next year:
1)better pass D. We play a soft zone and give up a lot of completions, particularly on third down. Our run D is usually good but we have given up too many long plays during games with better competition. Hopefully, the replacement linebackers will be fast and have intuition and quick response to where ball is going.
2) develop a true "killer" instinct. We rarely seem to put a game away against strong competition and we seem to loose focus when we go up by two scores or more. It happened again in this game when we were up 38-21. When our field goal (we should have scored td) was blocked I said I hope this doesn't turn out to be a turning point and unfortunately it did. Don't know whether it's focus, more conservative play calling or what but it would be nice to occasionally blow out a good team and not wait until fourth quarter to put the game away.
3) develop a stronger pass rush. We seemed to rarely blitz in this game. The one linebacker blitz I remember caused a qb fumble which we recovered. I don't think TAM qb was outstanding but we were making him so and do so with any qb we give a lot of time to pass. I realize a lot of his passes were quick release which negates a pass rush but then I go back to my #1 concern.
4) develop a backup qb. Hinton seems to get injured during the course of the season.

Really pleased overall with the direction and results of this team. Clawson appears to talk like he's in it for the long haul. Hope so and he ends up with the second statue on campus.

Our linebackers are slow. They can't blitz the passer and they can't cover in space in the passing game if you send a blitzer. Overwhelming amount of problems with the defense this year were at the linebacker level.

Strnad, Kemp, and someone else will need to step up next year and add some speed to the group.

The loss of Marquel hurt a lot more than I thought it would. Damn you Grobe.

In addition to Lee, we lost Banks (4.5 sacks), Brown (4), Jackson (3), and Stewart (2.5), along with a good chunk of our defensive backfield in Watson, Janvion, Okonye, and Austin. Duke was the only player we brought back who had more than 2.5 sacks. Given the turnover on defense (lost 5 of our top 7 tacklers from last year, and both Bates and Ejiofor missed time with injuries), the new offensive tempo, and the fact that we had new position coaches everywhere but DL, some drop-off should have been expected

Okay, check out the NCAA’s ACC rankings for LOWF. Changing perceptions might be critical next year as well.

Grad transfer at LB would be welcome, if for nothing else we won't have to count on two RS FR to play 60+ snaps.
There is 0% chance Clawson brings in a grad QB though. Would go against how he is building this program, as well as would hurt recruiting future QBs. I agree 100% with Clawson here.

Kicker, I think I like what you are thinking as well.

Kicker is going to have to be "enticed" to come to Wake. Not many schools are going to just cut loose a kicker who is good.

Agree with the sentiment for trying to find a good 5th year transfer linebacker. Preferably somebody with speed.

I think if we keep our eyes on the prize, put our nose to the grindstone and take every week one at a time, we may do something special

Good assessment except number 3. Ejiofor and Dunn played lights out and were in the backfield all game and generally hurried QB all year. Duke was credited with, I believe, 2 QB hurries in bowl, which is a farce. He had 3 on the final drive. I watched game again tonight and counted more like 8. Announcers even said “Ejiofor pressured Starkel again...” on final drive. He was credited with 5 total tackles, but was constantly in their backfield. Our DL maybe lacked stats, but most games (not Duke U. somehow) we got pressure.

Issue as stated by many was LB speed which we tried to correct in bowl by inserting Strnad alongside Jarboree in a 4-2-5. Strnad played great. Need that speed to catch the GT quarterbalk, who is still running.

Wolford healthy all year. Strnad inserted earlier and Ejiofor, Dortch and Carney healthy all year and...10 wins or maybe 11.

Next year we’ll be loaded everywhere except LB and K and maybe QB? QB play is everything.

Ridiculously great job by Clawson, OL coach, QB coach, RB, WR and DL coaches.

Defensive backfield will improve.

Special teams a mystery, minus Maggio and the miracle App State win.

I meant to add I don’t think I’ve ever seen a defense play harder and better, and yet give up 52 points.

That and the 25 injuries, 5 for us, hope Cortez is ok, and 20 for TAM, was truly bizarre.

Go Deacs.
