The one marked WS Open was where a lot of the ath marketing, IMG etc was. HOWEVA, it was demolished not that long ago. No clue why it wasn't that bad of a building. There are some WFU offices on Deacon Blvd., across from the Joel. One building houses the WFU Center for Nanotechnology and the building marked as "Winston Salem Open" (next to the old Last Resort) houses the Athletic Communications (i.e. Sports Information) staff and the Sports Marketing staff. It's a crappy, unattractive building both outside and inside.

Interesting. I hope those departments were moved back on campus somewhere. The building was a warren of hallways and small offices with small or no windows. The sports media relations department currently has no physical office location listed in godeacs.com.The one marked WS Open was where a lot of the ath marketing, IMG etc was. Wake needs to continue to strengthen its British ties for that to happen.Be better just to move campus downtown. Hit up RJR again for a big check?
With the benefit of hindsight, it might have been better to move Wake Forest to Charlotte instead of WS in the 1950s. But back then few people could have known how quickly Charlotte would eclipse Winston Salem in size and wealth. And the Reynolds family wanted to buy a university for WS not Charlotte. In the end, things worked out well for both cities and Wake Forest. Also, Wake has now wisely gained a foothold in Charlotte with the b-school degree programs, professional studies programs and the expanded med school.Be better just to move campus downtown. Winston could use a Cabelas and/or REI
So does Asheville and we have an REI. Don’t have good sushi, though. They've got Mast and Dick's.
Is there a good sushi place in W-S.
is ishii still open in w-s? that place was dope
eta: upon googling it seems like it was called ISE and also it looks way different now, they've renamed to a pho+sushi house???
Multiple things happened after the Baptists agreed to the Reynolds proposal to move Wake Forest College to Winston-Salem. Once Bowman-Gray Medical School moved and became attached to North Carolina Baptist Hospital in 1947, the move of Wake Forest College was inevitable. Details just needed to be worked out. With the benefit of hindsight, it might have been better to move Wake Forest to Charlotte instead of WS in the 1950s. The interstate highway system north south route in NC bypassed Winston-Salem. (I-85 goes Durham-Greensboro-Charlotte). W-S got one of the crappiest "interstates" (that did not meet standards) ever built. Movement of goods by truck overtook rail transport in many places.
Production of textiles and clothing in the US massively decreased as much cheaper labor overseas led to almost all clothing manufacturing to go overseas.
The Surgeon General issued the report on the dangers of tobacco and required warning labels on cigarette packs.
Banking rules were loosened. Managing money and short term gain became more important than sustained long term productivity. Charlotte banks were more successful and shadier at exploiting the new rules.
These three external events all negatively impacted W-S and two had positive impacts on Charlotte. Charlotte got direct interstate connections to both Columbia, SC and Atlanta, GA. Two state capitals. One arguably the most important city in all of the southeast. Thus Charlotte on the incline and W-S on the decline.
Charlotte took both big bank (wachovia and BB&T) HQs from W-S.
All happened before the move.of WFU. However, the gravitas of WFU is so great that W-S is now a separate Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area from Greensboro-High Point. You left out the stuff about:
Big Bang
Earth cooled
Dinosaurs
Meteor
Land bridge
Native Americans
Jesus
Colonists/Old Salem
Civil War
WWI & II
NASCAR / Days of Thunder
Charlotte-Douglas International Airport
Mizu is solid. They've got Mast and Dick's.

Clearly the lynchpin for making the Joel area, and thus greater WS, more attractive to tourists is a parking deck. Wonder what other "improvements" will come about from the $35M. Hopefully smart people make good decisions.A recent story in the Winston Salem Journal states that the city will receive $35M from the state government to assist with the proposed redevelopment of the Deacon Blvd. area. The article mentions a parking deck as one proposed part of the project. I don't think parking is the biggest problem with that area, though a parking facility of some kind might be useful if the development includes an apartment building.
Winston-Salem gets $35 million from state budget for new parking deck, other improvements near Coliseum, Wake Forest venues
The budget passed by the N.C. General Assembly includes $35 million for a parking deck and street improvements near the fairgrounds, Joel Coliseum and the WFU football stadium.journalnow.com
Paul McCartney’s live concert in Winston-Salem in 2022 taught the city a thing or two about the need for more parking in the area near the fairgrounds, Joel Coliseum and the stadium where Wake Forest University teams play football, Mayor Allen Joines said Friday.
Joines and N.C. Rep. Donny Lambeth jointly announced this week that an appropriation of $35 million in the recently-approved state budget will pay for improvements in an area including Baity Street and between Coliseum Drive and Reynolds Boulevard.
A parking deck in that area would be a plus for boosting tourism in Winston-Salem, Joines said. When McCartney played at what was then called Truist Field in May, 2022, there were lots of complaints about traffic and parking. Some fans gave up when they were unable to get to the show after it was well underway...
...The appropriation comes at a time when Wake Forest is reviving a plan to do mixed-use development in an area along Deacon Boulevard. Deacon Boulevard runs right through of the middle of the area slated for the improvements. Joines said that no site has been picked yet for the parking deck, nor has any preliminary engineering been done.
A lot of big crowd-drawing things are in the area. The Winston-Salem Fairgrounds occupies a big chunk of the territory near Joel Coliseum, including the Education Building and the Annex. Truist Field is now called Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium, but it’s not the only Wake Forest site in the vicinity: The Wake Forest Tennis Complex has indoor and outdoor courts, cheek by jowl with Couch Ballpark, a baseball field...
