2023-2024 NCAA Men's Basketball Thread

I know it’s been brought up before but I hate how the metric crap is impacting games. Wake should have had the bench in with more than 2 minutes to go and won by 10-15. Instead Forbes has to leave in guys to boost the margin of victory. I do not blame him one bit but it is sad that this is where we are. At least they share a video talking about good sportsmanship before the games.
Just so we're clear- this will end up being like a total of what, 20 possessions through the course of the entire season where we would actually put in walk-ons? It does technically count, but it's 20 possessions out of like 2100 we will have on the season. It's .95% of all possessions - even if you got boatraced for all 20 of those possessions, it's not going to hurt you very much at all.

People focus on that and don't realize what a small size out of the season it actually is.

So Caitlyn Clark's full of shit, right ?
Sir, this is the NCAA Men's College Basketball Thread.

If you want to discuss this, you can start your own thread (which will ostensibly contain a lot of exclamation points for no real reason).

Yeah, I'm a big fan of her game but she's making a meal out of something incredibly minor - that flop was Duke-worthy. I get that she was pissed about losing, and storming the court does present some legit safety issues, but that wasn't the incident to use to highlight them. It looked like the person barely made contact, and unintentionally at that - you might get worse treatment at a mall or airport and not think twice.

Say possessions again

So you don’t like walk-ons? Walk-ons have feelings and should be appreciated.

The video is not a good look for her.
LIke what player in the right mind is going to try and jog off the court when fans and other chaos is ensuing??? Not the sharpest knife in the drawer as your head has to be on a swivel there.

Everyone's making too big of a deal out of that whole mess. I don't think she flopped and I can definitely see how you could get the wind knocked out of you that way.

Right now the difference between #26 and #30 in KP is 0.23 per 100 possessions. Over 2100 possessions, that’s 5 points total for the year separating #26 and #30. So “not very much at all” in gross terms can actually be a pretty big deal in the KP rankings.

Fightin‘ Wes Millers getting worked by Kansas. In Lawrence, so no shame there.

check that, down to 6.

No one has really been talking about Syracuse. I know their metrics aren't great, but they are 4-3 in the league, all of their conference losses are Q1 (at Virginia, at Carolina, at Duke). They have no bad losses out-of-conference, are 1-5 in Q1. Which is one more Q1 win than Wake.

Their next four games are huge: FSU/State/at BC/at Wake.

All of Cuse's losses have been horrific:

  • UNC by 36
  • Duke by 20
  • UVA by 22
  • Gonzaga by 19
  • Tennesse by 17
This has killed their metrics. They do have a 20 point win over Oregon, when the Ducks were missing players. Oregon is healthy now and that may end being a Q1 win if the Ducks turn it on (Altman's teams often get better as the year goes on). Cuse also killed LSU (by 23) which is maddening given that WF lost to them. Cuse has even more work to do than Wake Forest to get in the tournament, but their are a ton of games left. FWIW, not sure if Cuse beats FSU tonight.

Got bored and put this together in class. Top cluster are teams that should be better than they are, bottom cluster is teams that should be worse than they are. Data based on Shot Quality, taken from ShotQuality.com. I tried to make presentation look as good as possible. I don't know what this could be useful for but I suppose it can show which teams are getting lucky as Expected Win % is calculated based on shot quality.
