Retired US Soccer / World Cup Thread (RIP)

is it the top 3 or top 4 from each region who advance to the WC? Games like today's almost make me root for us to fail, not qualify, and setback whatever progress has been made over the last 20 years.

Judging the US on a friendly against Canada, brilliant!

Oh well, if you would have told me we would go 1-1-1 over the last three matches I wouldn't have called you crazy. Disappointing, however.

As well as the Brazil match. Those certainly seem to say more than a 5-1 blistering of guys in kilts.

I know you can't judge much from one or even two matches, and particularly friendlies, but that Mexico team I watched today looked loads better than anything the US has put on the field the last two times out. They looked better against Bosnia too.

Better against Bosnia? Bosnia whiffed a free kick to give Mexico a tap in winner in the 93rd minute.

And Canada was robbed of a goal today. What's the point? That Bosnia should've tied Mexico and the US should have lost?

I apologize if my knowledge of soccer is not sufficiently douchey enough to contribute to this thread. I'm just not impressed with our soccer product now. Is it personnel? Implementation of a new system? I don't know. I will leave it up to you guys to debate.

Mexico was fucking awful against Bosnia and the US played Brazil equal. You're looking at results and not the play.

How was Canada robbed of a goal? Foul or not, the US players stopped defending after the whistle. Just shut up.

My point was Mexico looked subpar against Bosnia. But I'm more worried with us than them at the moment. And Canada wasn't robbed of a goal, there was a clear whistle seconds before any shot was taken. I'm more concerned that our best attacking chance came in the 93rd minute on a set piece, or that by the grace of god Canada missed a 3 yard sitter.

who gives a shit about Mexico right now? they aren't our competition until next year at best, and even then they aren't really our competition to qualify outside of the actual games against them.

let's hope the guys are ready to play on Friday and are able to sufficiently run up the score. and even if that happens, there's nothing to actually take away from the game no matter how good we might end up looking.

I'm really confused why we would play a more defensive 4-4-2 tonight. We played very well against Scotland and Brazil with a 4-3-3 and tonight I felt we were more defensive. Dempsey and Donovan are really difficult to use in a 4-4-2 because they both like to get central and the FWD doesn't know where to play. Dolo never got forward tonight. Castillo was good at times, but not as aggressive as he plays in Mexico. With no width, Canada just crowded the middle and blocked up passing lanes and space. Jurgen has to realize that CONCACAF opponents are a different beast and we have to go forward in numbers early and often. Forget playing tight defensively and let's try to score 3+ goals every match. The only chance opponents have is finishing their 1 or 2 chances a match. We get after them early and there's no problem. Tonight we played weak and Canada was able to see way more of possession than they should have.

Goodson was fantastic I thought. Donovan was poor again. Dempsey was solid, but didn't have much to play off. Bradley was flooded every time he touched the ball as Canada didn't have to worry about diagonal balls. Jones was poor, Torres was hit or miss. Just a poor performance overall.

I know he had a few rough moments tonight, but I thought Edgar Castillo did pretty well considering he thought 30 minutes before the game started that he wasn't even going to dress.

I was happy in general with Castillo. Like I said, he was more defensive than I'm used to, but he looked good apart from the terrible turnover that Canada scored on. Pretty clear to me that the back line is Johnson, Boca, Goodson, Dolo.

Castillo was pretty sub par to me. Gave away a few balls and made a pretty significant error that ended up not hurting us. Im fine with him being an emergency second option but like Bornstein, ill never feel comfortable with him back there.

He was 82% passing and most of his 5 or 6 turnovers were in the offensive third. He made some nice interceptions and marked well. I'd like to see him more aggressive taking guys on outside, but I thought he played well. He's a far better option than Bornstein ever was, and he's only a backup. Johnson's place isn't going to be threatened by Castillo.

Castillo did was he always does. Plays OK and then makes the fatal mistake trying to be too cute in his own half of the field.

By the way, I'm not 100% sure, but was Hainault the one who had 2 horrible late tackles in a 10 minute stretch, neither of which were awarded cards? I thought 1 was a straight red, but they were both definitely cautions and I feel like nothing came of it. The official even sprinted after him yelling at him despite playing the advantage. Very weird.
