WFU Hoops: '24-'25 Roster Construction Thread: (-) Carr, Monsanto, Ituka, Clark, Miller, Marsh, Keller, Canka / (+) Spillers, Biliew, Cosby

If you want to put hope in Forbes program and state your belief that it’s getting better with NIL support, well here is your real time evidence that Forbes will have to fight this offseason just to keep us at our current 20-win NIT level of competitiveness.

It’s also hilarious we spend all season with game thread crazies bitching about these players then complain when they leave.

"These guys suck and Forbes sucks"

"Wait... I didn't want them to leave. Not a good look."

I think it's more reasonable to wait and see who the incoming transfers are before making any conclusions here.

Boopie wanted to be paid in the top 1 or 2 of NIL on the team. Wake chose to value him lower than that, so he's gone. We'll see if that was the correct decision or not, but that's the way things are nowadays.

We are definitely going to need at least 3 of Reid, PFred, Carr, and Sallis in order for this program to have any chance of improving next year.

Don’t think we have as a society fully recognized how insane the current set-up is.

It is currently up to the fans to raise money to pay players’ salaries, even though we aren’t team owners and don’t receive any financial benefit from the players’ work. Fans only get bragging rights. The schools sign the $1 billion deal with ESPN, they get the revenue from ticket sales, merch sales, etc., but they don’t pay the players.

Sorry, but that is completely nuts. Not sure how long it will be this way, I’m guessing it will be relatively short lived and we’ll look back at this time as a period where everything was very stupid.
You’re not supposed to be paying their salaries though. You’re supposed to be compensating them for your use of their name, image, and likeness rights. Anyone feel like they’re getting their money’s worth in that regard?

Waiting and seeing is just refusing to make a common sense prediction. We have x amount of resources to bring in y amount of talent. The more talent we lose, the less likely we are to increase our overall team talent or even replicate it.

Interesting that Cam was left on the list. WF should get three of that group identified above. Beyond that it's not so clear.

Well the RTQNIL account has already implied that we don't need to worry about Reid or Carr. And it's certainly not impossible that Sallis returns if his current second round draft grade doesn't improve over the next few weeks.

I mean losing talent is also opening up more resources to bring in new talent.

We've also only lost one guy that's even meaningful so far.

Boopie leaving hurts...and another reason why the portal can't just become an unlimited free-for-all. At least when it started you knew that if you got a portal player he was going to stay. Now it's even more maddening.

That said, target a guy who maybe scores less and distributes more, as well as a HS PG who can provide depth and quality backup minutes and play behind a transfer for a year while he develops. But good luck finding one at this point.

All the other guys leaving is needed if this team wants to have any quality depth at necessary positions.

My fear is this is just the beginning. If everybody leaves, it's a bad look for Forbes and probably indicative of program problems.

There is some of that:

  • Tyree from Appleby's;
  • NC State's Fat Bastard has grabbed a few endorsements;
  • Jack Gohlke made a few bucks off his 15 minutes of fame,
For roster construction and retention, it's all about pay for play, and the NCAA has been stripped of its power to prevent that.

Good lord, come to the board after a few days and half the damn team is gone. Really sucks about Boopie. I liked him a lot

Yeah, that’s the whole problem with NIL and why a lot of people argued very strongly against opening the door to it. It inevitably turns into pay-to-play

That’s not how real market value works. Putting real world dollars on it, Boopie increased his value here at Wake, so its far from certain we will replace him with an equal player for that same amount of money, + the cost of recruiting.

Not sure the Supreme Court thought it all through, but they opened the door, and it's not changing.
