Over in Chapel Hill, Chancellor Holden Thorp issued the following statement in response to the report of an alleged hate crime against a gay complaining witness:

"As a University community, we condemn this act of violence. Our Department of Public Safety will bring the strongest possible charges against the attacker.

Based on the available evidence to date, the University plans to report this incident as a hate crime to the federal government."

Hang on there, Mr. Nifong. Mind if we wait for a few facts to tumble in before we notify the DOJ and start issuing statements about "this act of violence...", and start deciding on the severity of sanctions against "the attacker"? Don't you think we should actually confirm an attack took place--ya know---just so you don't have to be the next campus to start pumping out eight digit settlement checks when your group-nonthinking faculty decides to strike up another lynch mob?

Hang on, what's that you say? Breaking news?

CHAPEL HILL -- A UNC-Chapel Hill freshman who told police he was attacked by a man who burned his hand and called him an anti-gay slur made a false report, the university says.

In a message just released to the campus community, Chancellor Holden Thorp says: "The Department of Public Safety has determined that the alleged aggravated assault reported to campus last night did not occur. That report, filed with campus police on April 5, was false. The University will not report it as a hate crime."

"It is important to recognize that incidents of harassment do occur," Thorp continued. "When they do, we take them seriously. We strive to foster a welcoming, inclusive and safe environment at Carolina.

Oops.

Sounds like a typical Carolina student (or grad).
