Random assortment of thoughts:
-It'd be tough to overstate the importance of Kelly for Duke. Without him, they are a top 25 team; with him, they are a national title contender.
-Safe to say that, at this point, [Redacted] trusts Madison more than Codi. Really did not expect that to happen, and I hope it doesn't last, but I agree.
-Is Duke going to be "Duke good" next year? Mason and Curry (and Kelly) are the entire offense right now. Most of their young guys (Jefferson, Murphy, Marshall) are a ways away from making an impact, if they ever will. Thornton and Hairston are garbage. I know they have Jabari coming in, and Hood will be eligible, but still.
-I was impressed with most of the substitution patterns tonight. We basically have 3 quality players right now (Travis, CJ, and Devin). All 3 played about as many minutes as possible (considering foul trouble). Smart use of offense/defense with CJ and Rountree around the 6 minute mark. Would have liked to have seen Devin come back in a bit earlier, but that's a pretty minor quibble.
-As for the other 2 spots, we got a lot of quality minutes from a group of mediocre players. Madison and Rountree picked their spots very well. Codi and Moto made some nice plays, and (arguably more importantly) didn't make many boneheaded plays. Cavanaugh had one of his better games, considering the opponent.
-That said, I think we're getting close to the point where we need to cut Chase out of the rotation. He just doesn't add anything. I'm happy with CJ, Codi, and Madison sharing all 80 minutes at the two guard spots.
-Great energy from the student section tonight. I was disappointed with the rest of the crowd though, to be honest. Was sad to see so many empty seats.
-If the team played with that level of energy the rest of the year, we'd win 4-5 more games.
-Of course, we all know that won't happen. @ Maryland on Saturday sets up to be a classic letdown game. Add in the fact that the Terps lost on a buzzer beater tonight...I'm expecting a 20 point loss this weekend.
-Fuck Duke

Pretty good. Chase has had his fair shot. He is not a college basketball player. Sad, I was very hopeful, but a complete disappointment.

Despite my opinions on the coaching I want to say that those kids made me proud tonight......damn proud!

I'd say it's not as minor as you think. We let Duke hang with us and step away from us a bit before we re-inserted Devin. He is clearly our only post defender and scorer. Leaving him out that long was silly. Even Mike Gminski mentioned it and he's an imbecile. We had a chance to create a small lead or at least prevent Duke from taking a lead and we missed that chance. Good teams like Duke finish off mediocre to poor teams like Wake. Everyone in the building knew when we got to the two minute mark tied Duke would win. We just folded up.

Yeah, the zebras weren't exactly helpful tonight. But 2 seeming constants once again reared their ugly heads tonight. While we once again executed well offensively, we once again had another poor effort defensively, as Dick shot > 50% from the floor. I've always thought FG% D is the most important team stat, and Buzzdick's teams here and at Colorado have always been at the bottom of the ACC & B12. It's hard to get to .500 in the conference when you're always the worst defensive team in the conference.

The second thing is something I've started thinking about recently. We were even at the last TV timeout last night and ended up losing by 5. Even in our 3 wins, we've been pretty bad in the last 4-5:00 in games - we had 8-10 point leads that we almost blew against UVA, BC and State. Not sure whether it's youth, Buzzdick, some combination thereof or something else, but our last few minutes of close games have consistently been bad.

I didn't like mckie on curry down the stretch at all. Cj had a bad game and in fact has had a string of them. If he is able to guard curry and play a bit more aggressive, I think we win.

Also about 5 bad turnovers in the 1st half and the Moto 3 were the difference. Madison had not been in a situation like that in college (must get possession) and he threw it to the wrong guy

Edit to add Moto impressed me on the block. He fucking hurt some guys and was almost oblivious to it. Nobody is going to want to guard him next year. Jesus. Also love devin's confidence right now. I think he thinks he is the most talented big on the floor every game. Cannot believe he is becoming a 15/10 guy this year. I thought it would be next year

I think we are going to be more than fine next year w/o cj

Need to find a way to get CJ some open looks for 3. When he did finally get one, he did not shoot it - hesitated. If we can get that going, we are a tough out.

Also CMM is a better all around player than Jones, so not sure what is going on there.

Oh yes, this is right on. The key play of the game was Curry's 3 at 66-66. McKie had no chance to get out on him since McKie is not a guard -(dumbass Buzz).

That shot goes down and the game was over (especially since our designed play out of the timeout was a deep 3 from our outside shooting specialist, Moto - (dumbass Buzz).

Curry had about five of those looks from 3 down the stretch with Travis guarding him. Unfortunately for us he finally decided to make one when it was 66 all. I have no idea why our loser of a coach didn't switch CJ onto him, bc with that matchup his dagger was inevitable.

That along with keeping Devin on the bench (even after Plumlee got number four) was downright idiotic.

I did not see the game last night but I also have been thinking about the same thing. We have trouble finishing games. We get shaky at the end. These players literaly need to learn how to win at the end on this level. Poor Travis and CJ can be of little help. But before we can take the next step we need to learn how to play in close games and win at the end. There is of course a youth factor here. For those who are old enough, you can remember that the need to learn to win at the end of games was the case when Tacy and Odom rebuilt the basketball program as well. I am pretty sure our players can learn but you can't be too sure that Buzz can teach them until he does.

Cj was really bad defensively on curry in the 1st half. Some ofiy oddly seemed to have something to do with the floor. Lot of people slipping. Lot of stoppage of play. Of duke loses yay game I know what k says in post game - the floor was atrocious.

I think bzd was for some reason rewarding Travis' effort theu the first 35 minutes. He shut down duke frosh and had several blocks on help d. I think he would have stuck w rountree if he had not had that bad turnover in front off the bench. We had so many timeouts left I think you go w rountree and just call a timeout on te offensive end if its not a fast break bucket. You pull Madison IMO. Travis devin rountree cj and Moto or cmm

Or better yet, why not keep Rountree on him? Duke only had two guys that could put the ball in the basket last night and Rountree was doing a pretty decent job on Curry.

Why we didn't adjust defensively to help on Plumlee puzzles me. He had open dunks all night long. I think he was setting high ball screens and getting lost (coming off picks?) when he returned to the low post. We let him repeatedly torch us without adjusting, or adjusting poorly. Also, the Moto 3 after the timeout was astounding.

Moto's FT shooting in the second half was a nice surprise. He looked good shooting them - not clanging around the rim and falling in.

It was nice to experience a good crowd in the Joel again. It has been a long time.

I think the game plan was generally to shut down the 3 and let Plumlee have his way. Or at least it seemed to be to me.

I think the time has come to take the training wheels off Rountree and give him more of Fischer's minutes.

I really think that was the game plan and not a bad one really. Let Plumlee have a career night, but take away the 3 point shot from Duke. When Duke isn't making 3's, they are very beatable. I hate to give Bzzz much credit for anything, but I do think it was a good strategy. Of course, Bzzz is an idiot for even letting Chase Fisher on the court for anything but mop up time and I can't understand why he gets so many minutes?????

The first part of that plan is fine - but letting Plumlee have his points would have been a more sound strategy last year when he had a more limited offensive game.

What the hell has happened to Chase. Whenever they show him on the bench he is pouting.

My thoughts:

-really happy to see the student section so loud for a .500 team that hasn't had a winning season in years
-i don't know why fischer receives any minutes at all; he can't do anything out there unless we're down 3 with 5 seconds left
-rountree needs to see most of cav's minutes; i don't get it; cav shoots better FT's and that's about it; FREE ROUNTREE
-Moto is going to be a solid role player for us; i was disappointed to see him shoot that 3 when we needed a big shot (17.6% 3pt shooter), but he's going to be sneaky good in a year or two
-Not really sure what's up with the Madison/Codi thing, but Madison looked really good out there, so i'm glad we have solid PG options next year

Disappointing that we couldn't get the W, but very proud of the effort and liked what I saw. We just need to bring that type of performance on the road with us, too.

but our last few minutes of close games have consistently been bad.
As have our first few minutes to start games and coming out of the half. I find myself always relieved when we "break the seal".

Students were the best they've been in three years last night.
