I was having this discussion with a buddy the other day and brought up how I thought the days of 110+ win seasons regularly (even 100+ wins is a rarity) are a thing of the past given the fluidity of rosters, salary cap, etc. Seeing as how teams seem to almost be complacent and expect with upper 80-90 win seasons, am I way off base in this argument?

i mean it's not a likely thing to happen, but there were more 110 win seasons in the last 20 years than the 50 that preceded them.

110+ win seasons:

Year - Franchise - W
1906 - Chicago Cubs - 116
2001 - Seattle Mariners - 116
1998 - New York Yankees - 114
1954 - Cleveland Indians - 111
1909 - Pittsburgh Pirates - 110
1927 - New York Yankees - 110

In the history of baseball there have only been six 110+ win seasons.

Heck there have only been 24 seasons with 105 or more wins since 1900. Only two of these happened since 2000 (four since 1998).

You are completely off base.

The '95 Cleveland team would have probably won 110 in a full season.

What other teams would have had a real shot at 110 in a 162 game season?

expos in 94 maybe? on pace for 105. might have had a shot. expansion years help (1993 and 1998).

alltime list for teams <110 but on pace for it:

Year - Franchise - W - Pace
1902 - Pittsburgh Pirates - 103 - 120
1886 - Chicago White Stockings - 90 - 118
1886 - Detroit Wolverines - 87 - 115
1897 - Boston Beaneaters - 93 - 114

I think it's pretty clear that the '97 Beaneaters would have flown past 110 wins.

The 2001 Mariners..ugh. What heartbreak.

Would be interesting to see how many of these teams who had massively successful regular seasons then went and flamed out in the postseason.

Cubs lost to the White Sox in 1906 WS
Mariners lost to the Yankees in 2001 ALCS
Yankees won the WS in 1998
Indians lost the WS to the NY Giants in 1954
Pirates won the 1909 WS
Yankees won the WS in 1927

So only 3/6 teams went on to win the WS.

Just looked at the 2001 roster and was surprised that they didn't have Griffey or A-Rod. I think I confused the 2001 team in my mind with the 1997 team which was one of the MONTEst teams ever.

They had Bret Boone in full-out Popeye mode.

The 1969 and 1970 Orioles won 109 and 108 games (can't remember which total which year), lost in the WS to the Mets in 1969 (Seaver, Koosman and Nolan Ryan) but beat the Big Red Machine the following year, when Brooks Robinson pretty much willed them to win. Probably the best pitching staff ever assembled, though there will be lots of arguments on that score. The 1966 Oriole staff was also pretty good.

The 2000 team had A-Rod and lost to the Yankees in 6 in ALCS. The 2001 team was roided Boone, Ichiro, Olreud, and Edgar. The 1997 team was one of my favorites too...they could mash the ball with A-Rod, Griffey, Buhner, and Martinez. Paul Sorrento had 31 home runs. The team hit 264 home runs. I was stunned when they lost to the Orioles.

I wouldn't exactly call Olerud and Ichiro roided.

I think he's using roided as a descriptor for Boone.
