It's Over: RIP Yogi

One of the greats. Five times in his career Yogi hit more home runs than he had strikeouts and during the 1950 season he struck out only 12 times in 597 at-bats. One of the toughest outs and best players to ever play the game.

Truly one of the best ever as a player, doesn't get enough credit for his career as a player.

Absolutely. While he'll always be remembered for giving us some great quotes that have become part of our lexicon, he was probably the best catcher to ever play the game.

Definitely. One of the ESPN guys were saying this morning that although Yogi was only 5"7", he was very strong and said even recently he'd shake hands with Yogi and couldn't believe how big his hands were and how strong his grip was.

Great player and great personality. Tough guy who was kind and truly respected the game. Belonged to the golden age of baseball, IMO.

In his book, Ball Four, Jim Bouton told of a time when the Yankees were on the bus waiting to go from the hotel to Dodger Stadium for a world series game. Bouton had asked one of the Yankees PR guys to try to get him another ticket. The PR guy came running onto the bus and handed Bouton a manilla envelop with the ticket in it.

PR guy: "Boy, are you lucky. This is the last one."
Berra: "Are they all out of them manilla envelops already?"

Reminds me a lot of Art Donovan. They both served in WW2, Donovan as a marine at Iwo Jima and Berra in the Navy at Normandy, and they were both underrated as HOF players because their play for those who never saw them play was overshadowed by their comic personalities. RIP Yogi.

At spring training one year, a few Yankees went out to a restaurant for dinner. As Yogi approached the group, a woman complimented him on his nice tropical print shirt and sunglasses. "Yogi, you look really cool" to which he replied "You don't look too hot yourself". A Classic.

Plus, Yogi played in the shadow of Dimaggio and then Mantle.

Greatest Yankees Of All Time:
Ruth
Gehrig
Mantle
Dimaggio
Berra

Not bad company to keep, Yogi! RIP

Greatest catcher of my era. He has been in 21 World Series and won 13. And a consummate gentleman.

A Yankee original and amazingly enough; underrated as a ball player.

"You have to go to your buddy's funeral or he won't go to yours".

RIP Yogi.
