We have to stop the gambling (blitzing ) in these situations . Once the back breaks through a crease and makes a safety miss he takes it to the house. These are the longest 2 runs against WF in school history. Nothing close to this happened in the Grobe era. After a team crosses midfield , and particularly when they get in the red zone, blitz the hell out of them. But the risk is very high when a team has explosive athletes and is deep in its own territory. Also, this was early in the game. There was no compelling reason to gamble there.

No compelling reason?

You're familiar with the concept of a safety?

Our last line of defense is a glaring weakness… Hopefully help is on the way

Risk v Reward. It was early in the game . Same with the FSU run and 2 of the NCSU runs. Bud Foster takes fewer chances in that situation than Elko. He must love Vegas .

Exactly. We have good linebackers and bad safeties. So when the backers guess wrong and the back breaks through the line, it's up to the safeties to stop a 98 yard run. Name another time in the last 30 years of WFU football when we have given up even one run that long??

In both cases multiple tackles were missed, so don't blame it all on scheme, you got to make the play. Elko and the defensive staff has been the most impressive side of the Clawson staff through almost 2 years of the Clawson era so far, by far.

As mentioned, the Defense, for the most part, has done their job this year. Surely you can start another thread about CMM or something.

Watch out next week.

I don't think there's any doubt it will happen against Clemson, well maybe not a 98 yarder, but definitely a long run or 2. Clemson has a long history of doing that to us.

The defense has been very good for the most part the past 2 years. ND only gained 180 yards other than that play. Just saying back off a bit down there because we have given up the longest runs in FSU and ND school history early in the game when there was no big need to take that risk .

Janvion's attempt at a tackle on that play was one of the most pitiful things I've ever seen in a football game.

There was a breakdown in that an end or linebacker should have had first level contain and most likely the corner, second level. Both may have been blocked but should have at least redirected the RB so a safety could catch up. That being said, our safeties are no track champions.
