University of Hawaii announces its football program is facing a point-shaving probe. More to come.

HPD investigating point-shaving allegation involving UH football players, UH President Greenwood says

Although police have said there's not enough evidence yet to do anything:

HPD put out a statement which read: "The Honolulu Police Department became aware of the allegation in early November when UH officials gave a copy of an anonymous letter to the HPD. At this time there is not enough information to open a criminal investigation." Unless the department receives additional information, it would not be able to continue with the criminal probe, an HPD spokeswoman said.

This has been mentioned in several forums before, including this board for gamblers: http://www.covers.com/postingforum/post01/showmessage.aspx?spt=33&sub=101174416&page=6

Game is obv fixed, hawaii are cheap to pay off
i think hawaii is getting paid to point shave this game.
this game is kinda shady.
Hawaii QB shaves points for sure.
Interesting stuff.

what exactly is point shaving?
"Point shaving happens when one or more members of a sports team prevent a team from covering a published point spread, often purposely failing to score as many points as the team was expected to make. Gamblers who know the information in advance can win extra money by betting on the team that was not expected to do as well but does better as a result of point shaving."

how old are you, 12?

Referees and replay officials have to be involved, would explain a lot of what we have seen in the ACC this year. Zebra shirt stripes turned sideways with 6 digit numbers stenciled on the back.. that picture works for me.

I can't believe the ACC hasn't released a statement about the officiating, specifically the replay official in our game with Maryland. That was an abomination and very suspicious.

They're 3-7-1 against the point spread this year and haven't beaten the spread in two months.

Why do they have to be involved? A QB doesn't need permission from the ref to miss a throw on purpose, or the RB to go down on the first tackle.

You never know, but the Hawaii-Utah State game (discussed in the linked covers thread) does not fit the profile of a fixed game. Hawaii was -3 (favored by 3), and took a 28-7 lead into half-time. Utah State came back, but still was not covering into the game's final minutes. Down 3 in the final minute, Utah State scored the TD to win and cover with 14 seconds left. Never heard of a game where the team shaving points built a massive early lead and then failed to cover in the final secords. It leaves way too much room for a referee's call or some scrub to make an unexpected play to prevent the cover.

Yeah, you don't point shave against a team where the line is close. Point shaving most commonly takes place against a team youre supposed to beat and the spread is like 20 points. So say they are up 14, they don't score anymore so they dont beat the spread but they still win. Would be fairly easy to do as a QB. Throw a few incompletions so you don't score a late TD. Would be dumb to do against a close line where you'd have to actually throw the game to make sure you don't beat it.

The reason point shaving works and why players can be enticed into doing it is that you don't actually have to lose the game to do it. Just keep it a little closer than it's supposed to be.
