Why was that not offsides?

Nevermind, the opponent had possession and that would be considered an errant pass by the opponent, so no offsides.

Because the ball wasn't played to him, he stole it away.
 
I've seen this happen a fair few number of times. And it is always hilarious.

You can't kick the ball away from a GK as he is dropping it for a punt.


The rules have changed in that the GK today couldn't have dropped the ball and picked it back up again, however.
