Why ACC Football Sucks

That may be an effect.

Perhaps. It could be a symptom of UNC-CH being in trouble and Tom O'Brien being unable to inspire anyone to join him in Raleigh.

But having NC players choose to play at USC is bad news for the ACC. The SEC is able to keep its best players at home and raid its neighbors and the rest of the nation for the real blue chippers.

In a year or two, Georgia will have a starting backfield (QB & TB) recruited from Charlotte and Raleigh, and it will be an outstanding backfield.

So out of the top 10, clemson has two and UNC has one. Clemson was also very close on Gurley, Marshall, and Bullard. Part of it is UNC being down, and part of it is UGA just has some really deep hooks in the Carolinas.

All indications were Bullard to Clemson until the Orange Bowl.

Really shows how hard it is for NC teams to compete nationally. You have 4 BCS schools in the same state with no lockdown on the best talent.

It's not just the SEC schools. Notre Dame and Michigan have recruited NC well from time to time. There was an article in the South Bend paper after the Wake game in which an assistant commented that NC has better HS football talent than many realize and no BCS schools with strong football histories.

I don't think UNC being "down" is much of a factor. It's not like its a recent development. The last time UNC was anything more than mediocre was back in 1997 when current high school students were barely in preschool.

For all of the effort Grobe put in (are we still?) we can barely scratch in NC and could not after the orange bowl. TN hired alumnus Jay Graham (Charlotte HS?) from South Carolina, in part to recruit NC better. I know all the standard Wake problems/excuses, but somewhere, somehow we need to up our recruiting whether we write NC off or not.

We've gotten some good players from NC including:

-Aaron Curry
-Josh Gattis
-Josh Adams
-Kenny Moore
-Richard Belton
-Jeremy Thompson
-Chris Degeare
-Brandon Ghee
-Dennis Godfrey
-Josh Bush

Doesn't it largely have to do with academics? How many of the 4 BCS schools in NC are in the top 30 universities in the country and (supposedly) academically difficult.

Add to that other top universities like UVA, BC, and Georgia Tech and it makes the ACC a challenging place to attract recruits who only want to play football.

Places like Michigan and Notre Dame get recruits on tradition, just like UNC does in basketball.

The ACC has been so weak due to the QB play and coaching. Both of those are improving and this coming season should be a strong one for the ACC with WF, NCSU, FSU, UVA, VT, UNC, GT all brining back QB's who are older guys who have all had a year as a starter under their belt.

The ACC has been a poor QB league for generations. Even most of the great QBs didn't make an impact nationally.
