The fact that UNC has 18 verbals, 4 following Fedora, and only 2 decommts leads me to think there is no bowl ban coming. Seems the school already knows the sanctions, is telling Fedora and the recruits, and their coming points to light punishment.

The school doesn't know the sanctions and there is nearly no way they avoid a bowl ban. That would completely discredit the NCAA as an institution (even moreso than they already are).

...so why an up&coming coach and recruits that could play elsewhere?

They have been lying about everything from the get go. No reason to think they suddenly stopped lying to recruits about having no sanctions now.

Miami's dominating as usual and they are guaranteed tough penalties. Kids are stoopid

Fedora gets a chance to coach at a pretty good institution and he doesn't have a risk of being fired for a while if he tanks. Plus he's getting paid well. Recruits haven't be decommitting for any number of reasons in all likelihood with first and foremost the fact that UNC has probably been lying to them and assuring them that there won't be any severe penalties handed down while hoping that Signing Day occurs before penalties come out. That would be my guess.

UNC has lied about things every step of the way so they are undoubtedly lying to recruits.

Whatever the penalties, they won't be enough to deter schools from doing the same in the future IMO. Most schools would gladly partake in a 3-4 year bowl run in which they drum up enough money for significant stadium upgrades in exchange for a 2 year bowl ban and insignificant loss in scholarships.

You're looking only at the numbers. UNC's recruiting class lacks a lot of the star power some of their recent, past classes under Butch and Blake have had. Their recruiting has absolutely dropped off this year, even if it is not as much as we would have anticipated or liked.

It'll be interesting to see how many of the verbals back out after the penalties are handed down.

When is the NCAA announcement on penalties supposed to come out?
Unless it's in the next week, it will be too late for the verbals to back out. Don't think they will be able to 'de-commit' after signing day, in spite of any new developments...........ie. penalties.

Correct. the NCAA doesn't let the school know the sanctions...and let them announce them --when it's convenient. From what I understand ---they notify the school ...give 'em a few hours --and then release it to the media.
Others have said it well ---unc has lied from the get go.....and it's the carolina way.

If the kids are really worried about it and sanctions would deter them from going to UNC then you just don't sign a LOI or you sign one with a prevision that gives you a conditional release immediately from UNC if there ARE sanctions.

I might have just completely made up the conditional LOI but I do know that kids don't have to sign one by "signing day." Signing one on "signing day" just reserves you a spot with the school. If the kids think UNC would stick by them until they find out they do not have sanctions then just don't sign a LOI. Don't think UNC would actually hold that spot for them though so it's a risky move.

That's kindof the point. UNC still has tons of talent and is still in a better situation, performance-wise, on the field than they were when Butchy arrived and, presumably, the cheating started. You have to put them in a worse situation than they were in when Butch arrived.

Hopefully the NCAA will drop the hammer on the Holes on 01/31 and give the recruits a chance to make an informed decision...Then if they stay with the UNC Titanic they get what they asked for...

I would love for UNC to be forced into some academic reforms. The Swahili classes and AA studies programs that funneled athletes like Marvin Arroved Austin through need to be gone. That's not to say that every university doesn't have classes for jocks, but UNC went overboard in that regard.
