Pit Fishing Thread

I have decided to go G5...on sale so stoked...now have to find some wide boots

The Simms boots run small so if you take a 10, you will need an 11. (Simms says that, too). But check them out — they seem wide to me so maybe they will work. You will love the waders. I have the G4s.

Not a great pic, but landed a nice wild brown the other day. This picture doesn’t do justice to his color.

Shameless plug for a fly fishing club I started at my school which serves highly impacted middle schoolers and high schoolers who have had a difficult time working in a comprehensive school setting. Any support from any angling enthusiasts is appreciated!

You may want to reach out to your local Trout Unlimited chapter. I know the Roanoke Valley chapter that I'm involved with does an annual program with the Virginia Boys Home in Covington, VA. You may be able to get some volunteers or make connections for donations, etc...

Also consider reaching out to Fly Fishers International https://flyfishersinternational.org/ If nothing else, perhaps it would be helpful to get in touch with a local certified casting instructor from IFF.

Mercury still lurking around here?

Heading to Cherokee in the next few days for work. Been looking at some of the fly fishing options. A few friends have recommended going ahead to get a permit and go here (http://visitcherokeenc.com/blog/entry/ready-to-fish-cherokee-heres-everything-you-need-to-know/). I'm guessing the water is still cool enough for waders right now. Any other spots to check out?

As an aside, anyone ever tubed this area near the casino. One of the places I saw mentioned you could bring a cooler but no alcohol. I wasn't sure if that was like a liability comment or if that was legit a rule.

Here I is! :)

Can't recommend much over Cherokee way since I don't get over to that neck of the woods much (I'm more likely to head over toward Watauga/SoHo for 'big fish' fishing).

That said, the C & R water at Cherokee would be the first thing I did check out. Just may have to do it. And soon.

My peeps at One Fly Outfitters in Black Mountain could give you the skinny before you set out.

I look to wet wade as early as I can. I've taken to doing it 'New Zealand style' with shorts and under-tights. So much easier to maneuver without the extra baggage...and the invariable 'crotch bind' you get with waders. Depends on how deep you intend to step, but I'd think if you're not going much more than thigh high, you'd be ok. You'd certainly have less accoutrements to keep up with if you didn't have to wear waders. I do dig my Frogg Toggs pant waders, though.

Good luck and let us know how you do!

Brookies might be the prettiest trout...those blue halos are amazing!

Caught in Wyoming last weekend.

I grew up on multiple saltwater trips a year. Really the only fresh water fishing I've ever done is for Bass in my backyard pond.

I feel like I really want to get into some freshwater fishing (streams) this fall/winter/spring. What's the best way to get started? I have 0 experience and no gear, so starting at ground zero. Thanks! (Located in the 336, more than willing to drive within a 4 hour distance)

Are you asking about fly fishing? For trout? I'm biased so that's how I'm reading this, but not sure if that's what you mean.
