Where did I say there were no racists in MS? We got em all over the place. I feel like a broken record, but RJ you need to read rather than infer. I merely said that if I had to classify the worst racists that I have ever come into contact they are from the northeast. I will tell you why. Mississippi racists still have to co-exist with black people. So they understand that there is a certain level of decor that needs to be maintained, even if in their hearts they hate every breath that a black person breathes. I have met people from the northeast who literally have never had a conversation with a black person their entire life. They came to Wake Forest and were asking what all the black people were doing here. Seriously....at Wake Forest. So they had zero idea how to handle their prejudices.

So next time before you flame away in your normal moderate fashion, please read what I write. I have met a lot of racists in my life. The worst offenders in my own personal experience are from the northeast. I am not generalizing this to the population, just merely making a personal observation. This does not mean that Mississippi is not full of racists, because it clearly is.

This has been my experience too. My college roommate, from CT, had no problems telling racist jokes, dropping the n bomb, etc. I was astounded.

I don't think they are technically, but you have to be a white male to join and they work closely with/are considered allies with a lot of white supremacist gangs.

That's funny. I never experienced anything like that in my life until I went to the South.

I think the bottom line is there are racists everywhere. In some places it's more overt. Others, people keep it to themselves. But, I dont think any area of the country is more racist than any other. Except Mississippi, of course.
 
I think southern racists are just a little better at hiding their racism when they are not surrounded by people who are also racists (or who they perceive would hold their same views). Northern racists, at least the ones that grow up with little contact with African Americans, are less subtle because they are not used to living in areas where the majority or at least a large minority of the residents are black. Take where I live. Full of racists, but also full of African Americans. In fact whites are the minority where I live. So the racists only display themselves when they know it is 'safe'. Racists who don't learn the social norms of not being able to display their racism all the time can appear much more obnoxious and racist than polite southerners who kill with a smile.

I agree that there are racists everywhere. In fact I think the south gets kind of a bad rap. I would guess there isn't a whole lot of difference when comparing rural north and rural south or when comparing big city north and big city south. One thing that always amazes me is when a seemingly well educated person is racist. I can't figure out often how to explain to them how ridiculous their stance is.

I was going to say almost exactly the same thing yesterday, but opted against it. Blacks and whites have coexisted for years in the south. Regardless of the hatred that may brew there, there's a level of mutual acceptance.
 
The Congresswoman's statements are about her ignorance. How come the responses on this thread are mostly impressionistic speculations about the extent of racism in the North and the South?
