HP's UNC-Cheat Thread - UNC comes out on top, NCAA penalized by UNC

Wait, seriously? There goes the last bit of respect I had for Gov Martin. What a fraud.

Ben Swain ‏@thedevilwolf

Ah RT @bylinerp Report: "no confirmation for speculation" that counselors colluded w/instructors to offer easier courses to benefit athletes

Gov. Martin: "Who did it? Athletic department, players, coaches, they didn't create this. It was on the academic side."

RT @AaronSchoony: "Plagiarism and cheating were outside of the scope of the Governor's review."

They didn't interview anyone from athletics...

they interviewed Dick Baddour (Former Athletic Director), John Blanchard (Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athletes), John Bunting (Former Head Football Coach), Bubba Cunningham (Athletic Director), Bryan Griffin (Former Football Player), John Shoop (Former Offensive Coordinator for Football), and Deunta Williams (Former Football Player)

My mistake...got that statement from Twitter.

Still...only two players and a handful of others were all that were interviewed from athletics over a 15 year period...and nobody from basketball?

Did Martin interview the whistleblower that Dan Kane interviewed a few weeks ago? How about Wayne Walden?

What an effing joke. . .

You can see the list of people they interviewed at the end of the report. The report itself is largely statistics-based (it was done by an auditing firm, not really Gov. Martin) so it doesn't seem like they interviewed people unless they first found some corresponding statistical anomalies.

It seems like they basically talked to the same people who had been interviewed previously...this was more of a "fact checking" exercise than a "fact finding" one. So, basically, a big waste of time and money so UNC could say "Look! We did something!"

Fact of the matter is UNC didn't want to find anything, so they didn't.

From Luke DeCock's column this morning: Martin’s calls to Nyang’oro and Crowder went unanswered. They remain silent. Martin rejected the analysis of phone records, dismissed any examination of email correspondence and declined to interview any current or former basketball players.

Here's to hoping that Dan Kane has ammunition he's been saving until after the sham of an investigation was over.

It's hard to imagine a scenario that this entire scheme wasn't cooked up primarily to help athletes, but this report seems to fail to make that connection.

At this point, I don't think anything they put in that report would result in additional NCAA penalties, so ultimately it probably doesn't matter. The NCAA clearly wants to be done with UNC.

Wasn't the SBI and Orange County DA also involved in a separate investigation, or is that over as well? Anyone know?

The method of finding more fraud was ineffective because it did not follow the athletes. 25 elementary reading level students are not going to stand out at a school that large, but if you looked at just athletes more patterns would have emerged.

I'm betting that Dan and PP will make the former governor look foolish. But you'd have to think Martin had the same thoughts, right? Funny how UNC thinks one more coat of whitewash is all that's needed.

Does Martin have ties to UNC? Lots of stones left unturned in his investigation with various explanations.
