Facebook Gold from Crazies

Irrespective of the pure dumbness of that tweet, do conservatives actually think that if you say “you know Nazism is actually a branch of left-leaning political ideology” that it becomes true? Have they ever read a book?

You are ignorant on the subject. Fascism derives from socialism and is a branch of socialism. Read Mussolini, the socialist who founded Fascism.

And you still don't understand that extreme RW and extreme LW are not opposites. They are mirror images of each other. Nazism and fascism are the most extreme RW ideologies of the past century. To not know this is shows pure ignorance or is willful lying.

The notion that the Nazis were modern-day left-wingers is one of the great sacred cows of conservatives. You see posts on facebook or twitter or other social media about it on a regular basis. The fact that the great majority of the Nazi platform has far more in common with modern-day reactionary right-wing white nationalist, tribal, xenophobic movements is irrelevant to them. They'll argue until they're blue in the face about it - "it's got socialist right there in the name, see?"

Your problem is that apparently you get your information from facebook, twitter, and other social media, which are completely irrelevant for the issue of the connection between socialism and Fascism. Indeed, they are irrelevant for just about any serious subject. Read the sources of Fascism and socialism, not facebook and other social media.

sailor thinks that calling a country the Democratic Republic of Korea makes North Korea a democracy.

The fact that a Pub can say this without his head exploding makes me question my belief in a benevolent higher power.

I have read the sources, quite extensively. Have you read any sources other than social media for comparisons of Nazi and Fascist ideologies with modern-day right-wing movements? I suspect not.

Horseshoe theory. There isn't that much difference between extreme left wing and extreme right wing policy. Both are authoritarian in nature.

This is such facile horseshit.

Let's examine the original Horseshoe Theory going back to the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and Jean-Pierre Faye (and honestly ignore anything sailor ever writes, because of course there's a vital distinction between the Soviets and the Nazis). Yes, both Communists and Fascists in the 30s were critical of collapsing and corrupt imperial economies of the West. But Stalin joined Hitler in invading Poland not because he was fascist, but because he was an opportunist, and because he didn't hate anti-Semites or shirk atrocity.

What the theory ignores is all the manifold examples of centrists caving to or compromising with or even actively working with fascists. Chamberlain's caving to fascism, for example. More recently, Chait supported Trump and Douthat supported Le Pen (both ostensibly because they would harm their respective center right parties and shame them into cleaning up their acts). Manchin and Murkowski confirmed Sessions.

I don't think the fishhook theory that puts centrists next to the far right works perfect either, though. Fascism itself is rooted in the far right, but racism, nationalism, and authoritarianism appeal across the political spectrum. Actual Nazis hate leftists as much as they hate Jews, all their key text rests in a Marxist-Jewish conspiracy. Hitler was legitimized in Germany largely because business interests enjoyed Nazi anti-communist theory.

Crucially, and where it's so fucking frustrating talking to centrist do-nothings on this board, when you criticize leftists (via anti-PC or anti-academy or anti-protest or anti-speech rhetoric), it's fascists who benefit. Looking at the most polarized eras in politics, the Great Middle are more content finger pointing than choosing the obvious side, and fascists win because of it.

Leftist/Marxist's ideology and authoritarian leaders resulted in far higher death count in the 20th century than fascism. To be clear fuck fascism, but Marxism was been far more detrimental in the 20th century.

"choosing a side" doesn't mean choosing an extreme or losing touch with reality.

A perfect example is the MFA argument. You and your brethren on the far left call those of us who want to make Medicare available as an option for all employers and individuals as sellouts or weak. The reality is it would get the nation to full coverage, universal coverage quicker and eliminate private insurance (other than for supplemental, etc.) much faster and easier than telling the 160M Americans their private insurance is over.

The reality is companies and individuals will morph into Medicare without the scare tactics. It's the most basic concept of economics. People will buy cheaper and better if it's offered. If a company can save $1500/year on health insurance costs per employee by choosing Medicare over Kaiser, they will do so every time.

My bad. using logic and reality will draw the scorn of the left.

As to Bernie's free tuition for state colleges and universities (which will have many unintended ramifications which will hurt the middle and lower class) isn't radical enough and will still create massive student debt.

Most extremist movements take components from far left and far right ideologies. Nazism is a good example. The fact that a far left loonie like Townie have such an issue with it just pretty much validates my opinion.

Again we are talking about political movements that are well outside the norms of the American political spectrum so I don't know why anybody would be butt hurt by these characterizations but oh well.

Yep, all fascism has tried to do was genocide....their goal was to do so worldwide...you're right they weren't that bad...

If fascists were leading China or Russia their numbers would have been worse than the communists. Comparing numbers in countries that were massively smaller is nonsense.

with their appalling record in the 20th, let's hope the socialists don't get another chance in the 21st century
