The Dixie Classic Fair changing its name has been the most exciting thing to happen to my FB in a long time. It's fun to read comments about it and guess what the persons Facebook profile looks like.

The classic lines: "Well what about DIXIE crystals and DIXIE cups, HUH"? and my personal favorite "THIS IS OUR HERITAGE! I will NEVER go back to them fairgrounds".

It's true gold and for those who haven't indulged, I suggest opening up the official FB announcement that the name is changing and enjoy.

One thing that keeps occurring to me whenever I read posts like that one is how little right-wingers have changed over the decades in their need for a sinister boogeyman who's out to get them and destroy the "American Dream." At the beginning of the twentieth century it was anarchist immigrants/Socialists (usually Italian or Eastern European) who were undermining America from within. Then it was Communists/"Pinks"/Socialists from about the 1930s to the 1990s. Now it's a weird combination of "Muslim/Socialist/Radical/Immigrant/Gay-Transgenders" who's out to get us. The target of hate changes over the years, but the fear, paranoia, and basic message never does. And sadly, it seems to be an effective message in every decade. For all their bold talk, white right-wingers are an easily frightened lot.

It is a proven fact that when people get scared, they become more conservative. It is a basic instinct that people will close ranks rather than extend themselves when they feel threatened. The right wing doesn't necessarily need a boogeyman, as they could attempt to run on policies alone, but fear is so much easier as it plays into their hands. It is why Democrats can never really fight at that level.
 
I’ve seen those studies listed. They’re almost all psychology studies with little information about the sample. Psych studies are known for using non-representative samples like college students in lab situations that shouldn’t be generalized to real life.
