CBM: X-Men '97; Deadpool and Wolverine trailer

You all weren't joking. Just started watching and there was a TV-14 LV disclaimer.

That was actually pretty good. They really did right by Rene. The Dinah-John vibe was uncomfortable. It would give him a compelling arc and give Lyla something to do.

I'm about 100% over Curtis' character. He's just awful at all times. Hopefully he's considered expendable in the writers room.

Yeah. They're struggling with him. I hope they can give him a flashback focus ep to help right the character. Unfortunately, we know too much about him that's not working. He's Mr. Terrific but they're not using him as Mr. Terrific. They're using him as a whiny smart guy who doesn't quite jive with Felicity, despite their early chemistry.

The biggest problem with Curtis is that Rory pretty much effortlessly filled the role that Curtis was supposed to fill, except Rory isn't Mr. Terrific, and Curtis is Mr. Terrific, so Rory was the one they had to write out of the show.

Rory has been so good as Felicity's #2 and voice of reason, and has a wayyyy more compelling backstory than Curtis, and is also maybe gay/bi if they feel the need to "keep that box checked", though it's not like they ever really use that to inform Curtis' character anyway.

Warner Bros. are taking what should have been the easiest characters in the world to make successful (there is more than ample blueprint on how to do it) and just setting the whole thing on fire.

I bet most people with a working knowledge of Superman and Batman could sketch out a great movie with either. Hell, DF07 hates Superman and I'm sure he could sketch out a great Superman film. It makes it worse than their TV division manages to do 4 TV shows that are decent to good on a weekly basis.

Meanwhile, Marvel and to some extent Fox get people to hemorrhage $$$ for characters most people have never heard of.

there are great Superman scripts out there that studios can't make because they're too risky with such an iconic character. there was a superman spec script on the blacklist a few years ago titled "Man of Tomorrow" that was absolutely awesome but couldn't get made in a million years because of the liberties it takes with the canon.

marvel has done well generally following cannon with the avengers etc., but with superman it could really use a fresh take. instead they play it mostly safe and it's always mostly boring.

I don't think it's necessary to take a bunch of risks. That's the problem with what isn't working. They've taken a bunch of risks that haven't worked out. People want to see movies that are true to the character.

i don't know, i didn't see much freshness from the superman returns-man of steel-BvS installments. and a common complaint for superman i've heard is that he's kind of boring because of the all encompassing nature of his powers paired with the overall pureness of character. perfection is boring. his flaws always seem contrived and superficial.

marvel characters are usually variations on funny jerks with a heart of gold, brilliant and cocky and witty but suffer from the flaw of hubris. tony stark, peter quill, dr. strange and to an extent ant-man are all basically the same dude personality wise, but it works because that's a really good character to build a film around. captain america is the closest comp to superman character wise, and he's still kind of limited on powers scale and i'd argue he works best as a foil to the other dudes.

I only saw Returns and MoS once and still haven't seen seen BvS. Returns tried to be a pseudo sequel to the Donner films. In that case, they didn't update the character. MoS had some positive elements but they tried to make him kind of dark and edgy. Of course, a lot of people had problems with the destruction porn and killing Zod. I think a straight up Superman story would work. The key would be make sure Lois, Jimmy, and the villain have personality for days.

the attempted nolan-ization of DC without nolan himself has been a yuge problem. nolan is a badass. yeah he took batman from camp to dark and made a successful in every way trilogy, but you can't just try to replicate that by sprinkling the dark flakes on every comic book movie you make from there on out and think it'll work. the darkness itself wasn't what made the nolan movies great. he's a great freaking director. and they hired accomplished directors too, but they asked them for a nolan movie.

I wouldn't know how to create an entertaining Superman story that followed cannon, because his cannon is super hokey. He is an alien from an extinct race with the powers of a God trying to live in secrecy while also using his powers for good. I think the actual heart of an interesting Superman story would be his choice to either reveal his powers to the world and be forced to hide, or to hide his powers so that he can live a human life. This shit where he flies around fucking with the military without hiding his identity, and then going back to work with a pair of glasses on, is very stupid.

i don't think you have to fuck with him being an alien with the powers of a god. there is so much narrative fruit in a guy like that if he wasn't raised by freaking saintly farmers in kansas who raise him in the best possible way you could raise a super alien. BORING. you tweak his origin story while giving a nod to canon that someone else adopts him... limitless possibilities for an origin story movie where he's not completely good yet and future installments where he at least has a personality based on his past instead of being a freaking tighty-whitie wearing missionary worker sent from krypton.

I wouldn't mess with that part, that's the good part. My problem is with the goody-goody all American shit + using a pair of glasses as a secret identity. Throughout the history of literature, whenever God's have lived amongst men they were worshipped and/or or killed. The Superman cannon doesn't give a convincing explanation for Superman avoiding that same fate.

Well he's a goody goody because of who his parents are. Think about the different types of people that could have adopted superman with his powers and i think the Kents create the most boring ass person. He was created in the 30s and it still feels like it.
