Ongoing gun violence/injury thread

elkman, what about the non-response from national gun rights organizations?

By the way, there's apparently some big rally in support of cops in Ohio, presumably to support the cops who ambushed John Crawford and Tamir Rice.

So someone who had actually been driving around shooting people pointed her gun at a police officer and they didn't shoot her?

(CNN) -- A 29-year-old mother was fatally shot Tuesday in an Idaho Walmart when her 2-year-old son in the shopping cart grabbed a gun that was in her purse and shot her in an apparent accident, authorities said.

If we were allowed to research gun ownership, we could find out if guns actually keep children safer. The #eyetest suggests we see many more accidental shootings than stories in which families protect their children with a gun.

Edit: The results of such research wouldn't matter to the people who believe in guns over reason.

What does the NRA say about inner city gun violence?

Carrying a loaded gun while shopping with a two-year old at Wallmart? Oh yeah, and don't forget to have the safety off too. Is this a cartoon?

But how else is she going to keep her family safe?

"Academic research aligns with current public opinion. If you have a gun in the home, that gun is far more likely to prevent murder than it is to be used in an accidental shooting or to kill a loved one."

"The Centers for Disease Control reports that, in 2012, there were 58 accidental gun deaths involving children under the age of 15. More than 20 times as many children died due to accidental suffocation. In most cases, an adult accidentally shoots a child, not children shooting themselves or other children. And many of those adults have criminal records and drug or alcohol problems."

"My research shows that since blacks are the most likely victims of violent crime, they are also the ones who benefit most from being able to defend themselves. Women and the elderly are especially unlikely to be able to fend off a male attacker without the benefit of a firearm. Gary Kleck, Larry Southwick and other academics have shown that having a gun is by far the safest option when confronted by a criminal."

"Increased gun ownership may solve another problem. There are two ways to protect poor law-abiding blacks in high-crime urban areas: Either rely more on the police or make it easier for people to defend themselves. Given the polls show that blacks have a greater trust in guns than the police making them safer, why not make it easier for law-abiding poor blacks to arm themselves?"

Hope these articles help you to go beyond your #eyetest. Sorry they do not fit the narrative of most on this thread.

I won't be able to sit down and read all this for awhile. What research methods were used to show that guns differ in effectiveness by race?

In the first article, the author says "academic research aligns with current public opinion" then links to his own research, the second link. The third link is about a Pew study on people's opinions. So the only real research is the second link. That research finds that self-storage laws do not reduce accidental gun deaths and suicides. The only part that is about protection is the part that counts the increase in crimes in states where self-storage laws were enacted, and attributes those increases to the self-storage laws.

Our most conservative estimates show that safe-storage laws resulted in 3,738 more rapes, 21,000 more robberies, and 49,733 more burglaries annually in just the 15 states with these laws. More realistic estimates indicate across-the-board increases in violent and property crimes. During the 5 full years after the passage of the safestorage laws, the 15 states faced an annual average increase of 309 more murders, 3,860 more rapes, 24,650 more robberies, and over 25,000 more aggravated assaults.
