Multiple victims reported in possible shooting at Gilroy Garlic Festival in California

Ambulance crews were responding to reports that as many as 11 people were injured in a possible shooting Sunday at the Gilroy Garlic Fesival in Northern California, NBC Bay Area reported.

There was no immediate indication that a suspect was in custody.

A witness, Julissa Contreras, told NBC Bay Area that she saw a white man in his early to mid-30s firing a rifle that was "able to shoot three to four shots a second."

"It was just rapid firing," she said. "I could see him shooting in just every direction. He wasn't aiming at anyone specifically. It was just left to right, right to left. ...

"He definitely was prepared for what he was doing," she said.

They just had an interview on NPR with the mayor, I think, of Gilroy and he was so proud about them being the garlic capital of the world and excited for the festival. Sad times.

On Monday it emerged that six-year-old Stephen Romero was among the victims. His grandmother, Maribel Romero, told KGO-TV that Romero was a “loving boy” who was “always kind, happy and, you know, playful”. Romero’s father, Alberto Romero said his son had been playing on a bouncy castle when the shooting happened. Romero was not at the festival, and learned that Stephen had been shot when his wife called from the hospital.

Evenny Reyes, 13, told the San Jose Mercury News that at first she thought the sound of gunfire was fireworks but then she saw someone with a wounded leg.

“We were just leaving and we saw a guy with a bandana wrapped around his leg because he got shot,” Reyes told the newspaper. “There was a little kid hurt on the ground. People were throwing tables and cutting fences to get out.”

I’m so glad we live in a society that values guns over vulnerable people and children. I’m sleeping super well at night knowing my kid could get shot at a family festival. USA USA!! #blessed

Major props the police were able to neutralize him that quickly. But, also, super fucked up he was able to inflict that much death and damage that quickly with a LEGALLY bought AK47. What the hell. Our priorities with guns are sooooooooo fucked up where we can sell that death machine, which is what it is gun nuts be damned, for the sole purpose to make money. 🇺🇸! Way to go, team! Nothing needs to change at all! All is well!
 
Props to the cops but it also is a reminder that the presence of police at a large public event like this doesn’t deter these killers.
