The Pit Parenting Thread

Nope. Under a year gets in free. Or slightly over a year if they look small enough.

Birdie has never had a ticket and she turned 2 before last season. #OOOOOOPPPPS

Official policy is children under 1. Practical application is "babe in arms".

yeah, we had it mentioned to us last year as we entered and we figured this year it was easier to go ahead and get him a ticket.

Shot in the dark that maybe someone here knows about this, but I'm under the impression I can pay my nanny's monthly healthcare premium and receive a partial tax credit for those payments. However, I haven't been able to figure out whether I need to pay it directly to the insurance company or whether she can pay and I can simply reimburse her (and of course I'd keep a copy of the invoice). I'm also not sure whether this option is only available starting in January with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, and, if so, whether it's only available if the nanny's health insurance is through the government's SHOP exchange. I'm under the impression I could get some tax credit now, but that for next year she'll have to switch insurance providers and get her health insurance through the SHOP exchange (which of course seems like a pain in the ass).

Anyway, I have my personal CPA looking into this (aka my mom), but because it's confusing, I figured I'd check with my fellow parents to see if any of you can offer insight.

tl;dr: Paying for childcare suuuuuuucks.

Unfortunately I don't know the answer to your greater question, but I agree with your last sentiment! I just went back to work in early September, and we're doing a nannyshare, but it ain't cheap. Yay DC!

How do you currently pay the Nanny? Is she an independent contractor or do you take out withholding and giver her a W-2?

We do it on the up-and-up. She's an employee and we handle taxes accordingly.

I had my most awkward parenting day on Tuesday. So, my 18 month old son has been real moody and crying when we get him dressed and pick him up. Not like him at all. So my wife and I are discussing what could possible be wrong (he had hand, foot, mouth ten days before = nightmare). We decide to give him the once over and my wife sees that he screams crying whenever you move or touch his right elbow. So we call the doctor (our pediatrician) and he goes in. End up a children's hospital and then to an ortho specialist. He has a broken elbow. So at each doctor: How did this happen?? How long ago?? And we have no idea. We thought defax was going to come get him. Tough kid though.

aww, poor kiddo! that's terrible, for him and you! did his arm get tangled/twisted in the crib, you think?

We are really not sure. Assume he fell on it and hit the bone or something. Only two weeks in the cast. They heal quick.

eeek, so cute.

still terrible, but adorable.

So my wife's due date is 11/20 and this pregnancy thing SUCKS for both of us (her more than me obviously). She's now experiencing some of the more terrible side effects (gross), but the heart burn, back pain, sleeping problems, general discomfort 24/7, etc. YIKES. It sucks sleeping in a bedroom with wide open windows when it's sub-40 degrees, but she's always hot so I just deal. We have our final sono on Friday, but I'm pretty sure my wife wants this thing out of her ASAP. She was all about the vaginal birth, but I don't think she'll have the patience to wait more than a few days after the given due date if our daughter doesn't want to meet us yet.

Just venting. My wife keeps reading everyone has amnesia once the baby is born and forgets all about how terrible pregnancy can be, but that's not helping right now.

I hear ya. We are due (#2) on 11/26, scheduled C, but the past few weeks have been unbearable. She's miserable and as for sleeping, forget about it. Didnt help the 3.5 year old was up 3x last night complaining of "noises" in his room... really didnt help I had just watched "Paranormal Activity"...

I was literally just talking about this the other night. As you said, it's not so helpful when you're in the last weeks of pregnancy, but you really do forget a lot of the very worst (or maybe "forget" isn't the right word...but it's somewhat minimized and pushed far back in your memory as living with the baby takes over). Of course then you have different things to deal with from postpartum healing and sleepless nights to a baby on the move and getting into everything.

This is so true. My wife had some serious revisionist history going after the birth of each of our children. "Pregnancy wasn't THAT bad..."

Bullshit.

Yeah, I definitely have said a few times that labor and delivery wasn't that bad/that long. Luckily this pregnancy has been going pretty smoothly (I'm just getting over morning sickness at 18 weeks though so maybe I am already revising). But I do know I have some uncomfortable times ahead (I do remember saying during my pregnancy with E that anyone who "just loved being pregnant" was a liar...and that pregnancy was easy compared to lots of other people I know) and I feel bad for Matt whose boss is also pregnant because he deals with pregnant chicks 24/7.

We're less than 2 months out from #2, and my wife is pretty miserable. I had forgotten about the sleeplessness, but that is really kicking her ass lately. Anyway, best of luck to you. It'll be over soon enough.

Definitely true for us. When considering kid #2, wife claimed that she actually enjoyed being pregnant. During pregnancy for progeny #2, she was like "WTF was I thinking?" To be fair though, pregnancy 1 was super easy for her and #2 was far more difficult in terms of sickness and breathing and what not.

There was no way she was considering a C-section though. She did enough rotations in OB to know that's definitely not what she wanted if it could be avoided, especially when considering having a whole gaggle of kids. Probably not a big deal if only having 1 or even 2, though even 1 freaks me out a little bit.
