Ongoing NC GOP debacle thread

There is a huge population of young, uneducated rednecks in this state who vote overwhelmingly Republican.

Yet this bill seems to disproportionately impact them negatively.

-------
Democratic state Sen. Angela Bryant offered an amendment on Thursday to overturn the food stamp cuts, saying that there are not enough jobs to go around in rural counties.

“Over several sessions here were have reduced funding for job training and education,” Bryant pointed out during floor debate. “So we are basically relegating them, I guess, to steal for food.”

Bryant asserted that there were better ways to police the abuse of SNAP benefits, but her amendment was dead in the GOP-controlled Senate.

They don't think it's them though. They're not the ones mooching, they earned everything they have. It's those other people who are living off the government. Cognitive dissonance at its worst.

This thread makes me want to move out of North Carolina and away from the South in general.

Before the deadline, Senate fires a resounding artillery barrage in its ongoing War on Cities. Want to pass laws to make life better for your citizens? SCREW YOU! Big Gummint in Raleigh is having none of that!

Barefoot had already successfully pushed through a bill targeting Planned Parenthood, which he had put in an unrelated bill that has now passed both chambers. And a “technical corrections” bill aimed to fix mistakes in earlier legislation was attracting a number of amendments late Tuesday – some of which could have been filed as separate bills earlier in the session.

Barefoot downplayed concerns about the local government legislation’s late introduction. “The legislature moves the way the legislature moves,” he said, adding that the new legislation is “very simple.”

“It’s only two or three pages long,” he said.

Barefoot is so awful. Tragic that the guy barely won last November, after very hypocritical campaign ads. One of those politicians you'd like to just punch in the face for being such a dingus ahole.

Looks like the legislation throttling municipalities' ability to govern their own constituents has been mothballed in the House. What few victories cities have had under this legislature have come from the House since at least a few of the Republican representatives there have urban constituencies.

Taking public school lunch money and giving it to charter schools that don't provide lunch. Bus money to schools that don't provide buses.

"Traditional public schools share funding with charter schools based on enrollment numbers. But some public school funding is kept separate from the money that’s split with charters. Under the new Senate bill, public schools would have to share additional federal funding, gifts and grants, sales tax revenues and other funding."
