Ongoing NC GOP debacle thread

General Assembly tells elementary schools to reduce class sizes. Schools are required to figure out the logistics (finding space for new classes, hiring and paying for new teachers) with no financial help from the state.

If left up to the schools, they may be forced to eliminate art, music, PE, and other enhancement classes, increase the class size in the upper grade, put two classes in one room, move students to different schools, and make other difficult choices.

Not sure I understand why 17 students per class is important for third graders, but anything goes in fourth grade. And then in sixth grade the students start physically abusing their teachers.

There's not much empirical support for strict class size policies especially at the state level. The key is to give administrators freedom to allocate resources.

No we cannot give public school employees any flexibility, they must be micromanaged by lawmakers, preferably Republican ones. Also, it is critical that for profit charter schools be given maximum freedom and flexibility to use taxpayer dollars, because that's the best way for the invisible hand of the market to teach small children.

Electing judges shouldn't happen at all. It's a farce. If you have to have voter input, then go with the Missouri Plan or some similar plan where the judges are appointed by the governor and/or a bipartisan (or nonpartisan) commission and then after X amount of years, there's a retention election. If the majority votes for the judge's retention, they serve out the rest of their term. If they aren't, then you start over.

The percentage of the electorate with enough information to make an informed decision on which judge should be elected is miniscule.

So much this! Agreed on all points.

RALEIGH, N.C.
A federal court announced Wednesday it will go through with plans to hire an outside expert to redraw several North Carolina legislative districts, rejecting arguments by Republican lawmakers that they should get another crack at fixing House and Senate boundaries.

An order from the three-judge panel appointed a Stanford University law professor to redo by Dec. 1 two Senate and seven House districts that the judges previously ruled were among 28 districts from six years ago tainted by racial bias.

The GOP-dominated legislature approved new maps in August based on rules that prohibited the use of the racial data of voters in forming them. The judges said those new boundaries didn't fix all of the problems. In the order, they questioned whether the GOP's use of political data and protecting incumbents in favorable boundaries "embedded, incorporated and perpetuated the impermissible use of race that rendered unconstitutional the 2011 districts."

A lawyer for the Republican legislative leaders wrote the Greensboro federal court on Monday that bringing in Nathaniel Persily as a special master would be premature and questioned his impartiality. But the panel disagreed.

"That's your hard-earned money. You should keep it for yourselves just like Jesus said. Those are just lazy moochers anyway."
