ACA Running Thread

Economic Ripples: Hospital Closure Hurts A Town's Ability To Attract Retirees

..."Unfortunately, many rural hospitals across the country are having a difficult time and facing the same challenges, like declining reimbursements and lower patient volumes, that Cumberland River Hospital has experienced," CEO Paul Korth said in a written statement.

Celina became the 11th rural hospital in Tennessee to close in recent years — more than in any state but Texas. Both states have refused to expand Medicaid in a way that covers more of the working poor. Even some Republicans now say the decision to not expand Medicaid has added to the struggles of rural health care providers....

It’s almost like the ACA was sort of forward looking in a benificial way.

It’s almost like the ACA was sort of forward looking in a benificial way.

Yes, but since it's called "Obamacare" Trump and the GOP are determined to destroy it. If Obama created it, or his name is on it, then Trump and the GOP are hell-bent on erasing it from existence, no matter how much damage doing so causes, or how many people get hurt. It's one of the things which has become painfully obvious about Trump and his base since 2016.

The latest example of price gouging
https://www.vox.com/2019/4/3/18293950/why-is-insulin-so-expensive

When inventor Frederick Banting discovered insulin in 1923, he refused to put his name on the patent. He felt it was unethical for a doctor to profit from a discovery that would save lives. Banting’s co-inventors, James Collip and Charles Best, sold the insulin patent to the University of Toronto for a mere $1. They wanted everyone who needed their medication to be able to afford it.

Today, Banting and colleagues would be spinning in their graves: Their drug, which many of the 30 million Americans with diabetes rely on, has become the poster child for pharmaceutical price gouging.

The ACA markets are actually very stable, and all the death spiral fearmongering was nonsense, exhibit I’ve lost count.

I'll just put this here

a "nonprofit" hospital run by alleged Christians pays its employees starvation wages, requires them to get medical care only in the place they are employed, and garnishes their starvation wages when they unsurprisingly can't pay for care.

Meanwhile, the CEO of these "nonprofit" hospitals makes about $1.3 million a year. https://www.bizjournals.com/memphis/news/2017/10/06/how-local-hospital-ceos-compensation-compares.html#g/421200/8

pretty great medical care system we've got here in the US of A.

"I sold my soul to the company store." That is terrible, and it really is a modern day Company Store. Provider abuse knows no bounds. This is how and why unions are needed. These employees should walk out or strike. The government should declare local providers like this monopolies and throw Sherman Anti-trust at them.

The case against ACA is being heard on appeal today. If the Appeals Court agrees with the lower court, ACA could be ruled unconstitutional. Both sides will appeal to the Supreme Court.

Over 100,000,000 Americans with pre-existing conditions can afford health insurance because of ACA. If Trump gets it overturned, 2020 becomes a one issue election.

Hell, for trying to get it overturned, it should be the #1 issue.

Heard about this on NPR. The SCOTUS said the ACA was legit bc the penalty for opting out was considered a tax. Now the penalty for opting out has been reduced to $0; therefore, it can no longer be considered a tax.....or so says a lower court. Now appealed. I guess this now (or soon) will belong in the SCOTUS thread.
